序幕：2001-2005 - “Turn It Up Faggot”
Deerhunter (獵鹿人)，2001年在亞特蘭大的喬治亞州組成， 第一代正式陣容由主唱Bradford Cox、吉他Colin Mee、貝司Justin Bosworth及鼓手Moses Archuleta組成，團名是此團第一位鼓手Dan Walton所取，此人在創團不久即離去。第一份合約簽給了當地的Die Slaughterhaus唱片廠牌，2004年6月的「Turn It Up Faggot」是他們最早期的full-length大碟。如你所見，封面從攝影、印刷至剪輯由Bradford一手包辦，圖案是同鄉復古車庫團Black Lips一個團員胸膛上的刺青。 Joshua Fauver在離開另一個亞特蘭大團之後，加入Deerhunter擔任貝司位置。2004年錄製過程中，原始團員之一的Justin Bosworth在一場滑板運動中重創腦部，以致不幸意外喪生，卒年僅24歲。團友的猝逝已然化為音樂靈感，卻也使得這張Justin來不及參與的樂團處男作錄製過程格外艱辛，也讓Bradford對首作感到矛盾，曾表示痛恨這張專輯。在此之前，Justin Bosworth只參與過Deerhunter與另一樂團Alphabets共同發表的限量300份的7吋碟，2005年發行。「Turn It Up Faggot」發行過後，Bradford邀請中學好友Lockett Pundt加入樂團。
轉捩：2005 -2007 - “Cryptograms” 和”Fluorescent Grey EP”
2005年Lockett Pundt開始擔任吉他位置，從此開啟Deerhunter旺盛的創作力，然而團員仍歷經幾度更迭。2005年11月，樂團只花了兩天的時間錄畢第二張專輯「Cryptograms」，2006年專輯問世前，Pitchfork將碟內一曲”
Spring Hall Convert”加入Infinite Mix Tape series予以推薦，遲至2007年初才由獨立廠牌Kranky發行。專輯內頁Bradford題獻給一位亡殁於海洛因毒癮的朋友。「Fluorescent Grey」EP早在’06年完成，遲至翌年發行，同月又推出一張小單曲”Whirlyball 7”，只限於他們亞特蘭大內的唱片行發售。2008年10月推出雙碟「Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.」，同時吉他手Colin Mee兩度出走，Bradford馬上找來高中啦啦隊好友Whitney Petty替補，但隔年5月又迅速公告Whitney不再是團中一員。
