gangith: Yeah can't really argue that point other than to say while Brian might be the greatest pop composer of last century he was also obviously rivaled by other noteable "true artists" like Scott Walker & Harry Nilsson

pet sound is one of the perfect albums of the sixties, his ear for the orchestation is so disctintive, his studio work really ahead of its time. right number of songs, right sequence, right timing. perfect, beutiful, moving stuff...

For me, Brian's the only pop composer to rival historical greats like Bach and Beethoven. It's not really about a tremendous body of work though. Besides Pet Sounds and SMiLE, he only has brilliant stuff in patches. It's in the details of his music, the arc of his melodies and the nuance of his harmonies. God Only Knows and Surf's Up are perhaps the two best songs I've ever heard. What really places him historically is his treatment of Pet Sounds, wherein he sustained his aural poetry over the course of an entire record and brought it all together into a work with the depth and development only life itself can claim to mirror.
