well Neil Young was anti drugs for starters, and the recording of this was in a hut in wisconsin with very little rehearsal, or editing etc - all adds to the magic - but you either get it or you don't I guess

I'm pretty sure it's a gadget called an e-bow. Handheld, and to be generally used with guitars (but suppose it could be used with any strung instrument) it has an electromagnet that vibrates the string to get a sound similar to drawing a real bow across the strings. Of course he could be usind a conventional violin bow...................
