Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Bat For Lashes is a pseudonym for the Pakistan-born British singer-songwriter Natasha Khan; a talented young woman, who’s been one of the most enticing discoveries for me this year. Her ethereal voice carries qualities reminiscent of Enya, Björk and Tori Amos. She is also someone who understands the meaning of music as an art of storytelling. And communicating your emotions via metaphors. The trick with this is to know what you're doing; once you do it wrong, it's stupid, but when you're good at it, it's ingenius. Music is so dumbed down nowadays that the term "concept album" makes people go: "Omg! Who does she think she is, trying to be smart? She's pretentious!". Bullshit. This is what music is supposed to be – ambitious and creative, not dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

Ok, lemme unravel the "plot" of this album song by song, for the slow-minded folk. Two Suns is a thematic album that deals with the dual nature of ourselves and our existence. Basically, it relies on the metaphysical principle of yin and yang - light and dark, good and evil, love and pain, male and female, etc. If you're familiar with fairy tales or myths, the lyrical content shouldn't be overly difficult to grasp. She's not reinventing the wheel in here.

Glass... This booming opening number is about her quest for her soulmate, "a knight in crystal armor", but "when two suns are shining, the battle becomes blinding" - relationships are not easy to maintain; "but we ride tonight / tonight, tonight we ride" - each moment together counts.
播放Sleep Alone... a pretty straightforward song about loneliness and the comfort offered by a lover in her dreams (later on she reveals his name).

播放Moon And Moon... explores the idea of "genderbendering". "I’d be boy and you'd be girl", "calling moon and moon" - two opposites become each other, the essence of androgyny.
播放Daniel... is about escaping your nightmares to find safety in the arms of your lover (who may or may not be Karate Kid, haha). The most gorgeous song on the album. Stylistically, it’s like a fantasy that transports you through time right into the 80’s.
播放Peace Of Mind... speaks about reaching a zen-like state within yourself; a higher, calmer level of being. Rise above your troubles, rise above your fears, conquer that side of yourself.
播放Siren Song... the temptation to succumb to her dark alter ego – the "femme fatale" figure (whom she calls Pearl) - is the most prevalent in this one.
播放Pearl's Dream... Pearl and her desires become more ambiguous, she becomes attracted to innocence and light. "You know that it's time to go up, up, up, up, up... had a big machine riding your shoulders."
播放Good Love... talks about being torn between self-destructive tendencies (passion, jealousy) in a relationship and the yearning to hold on to a healthy relationship and how these two aspects are not always easy to separate from one another.

播放Two Planets... she again uses mythical motives to illustrate how life consists of two opposing forces - "day cannot exist without a night", - and how we all are the universe and the universe is us.
播放Travelling Woman... a journey to self-realization.
播放The Big Sleep... come on, do I really have to explain this one?

If people bothered to think a little or use their imagination more, the wonderful works of art we have would be rated accordingly.

    9/10

    LYRICS:

Daniel, when I first saw you
I knew that you had a flame in your heart
    And under wild blue skies
    Marble movie skies
I found a home in your eyes
    We'll never be apart

    And when the fires came
The smell of cinders and rain
    Perfumed almost everything
We laughed and laughed and laughed

    And in the golden blue
    Car you took me to
    The darkest place you knew
And set fire to my heart

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

    But in a goodbye bed
With my arms around your neck
Into our mouths the tears crept
Just kids in the eye of the storm

And as my head spun round
My dreams pulled me from the ground
Forever to search for the flame
    For home again
    For home again

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 3

    101. Muse - Map Of Your Head
Impressively, this is one of two Muse B-sides on the list, showing the depth of their catalogue.

    102. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 播放Maps
This was released back in 2003 and it still feels fresh.

    103. Death Cab for Cutie - 播放Marching Bands of Manhattan
Okay, the lyrics are mostly cringe-worthy (except for the part about living like a hermit in your own head), but it's a great tune.

    104. Oceansize - Massive Bereavement
Oceansize is probably the most underrated band of our time. The climax of this song is mind-blowing.

    105. Slow Club - Me and You
"I've got a feeling someone else is reading the letters I wrote to you."
"Well my pet's illiterate and I live alone, so it's someone in betwixt of me and you."

    106. The Mars Volta - Meccamputechture
They manage to make a saxophone sound menacing, which is an accomplishment in itself.

    107. Oceansize - Meredith
The first Oceansize song I really loved. Apparently this was on The O.C.?

    108. The National - Mistaken for Strangers
It's hard for The National to make a really bad song, because Matt Berninger's voice is so awesome, but the songwriting on this one stands out.

    109. Frightened Rabbit - 播放The Modern Leper
    An overwhelmingly good track.

    110. Joanna Newsom - 播放Monkey & Bear
Lyrically, this is Joanna Newsom's most cohesive song. It tells an interesting story, which unlike most of her songs is fairly easy to follow.

    111. Animal Collective - My Girls
Animal Collective: it's not just for hipsters anymore!

    112. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
I can't decide whether this or White Winter Hymnal is their best song. This is the more complex of the two, though.

    113. The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
The vocals on this song are just bursting with joy. It's hard not to smile when you listen to it.

    114. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Youthful idealism tinged with sorrow in the form of a song.

    115. Queens of the Stone Age - 播放No One Knows
    That riff!

    116. Radiohead - Nude
I'm just glad that when I google this I don't get pictures of Thom Yorke naked.
("You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking...")

    117. The Decemberists - 播放O Valencia!
Colin Meloy's voice is always kind of flat, but it's got a certain charm, especially on this song.

    118. Grizzly Bear - On a Neck, On a Spit
These guys sure can write songs. Everything on this song is put together perfectly, but the drumming stands out.

    119. Regina Spektor - 播放On the Radio
This song reminds me how great "November Rain" is. Also, it's got some of Regina Spektor's most touching lyrics.

    120. Oceansize - One Day All This Could Be Yours
    Chilling.

    121. Joanna Newsom - 播放Only Skin
The best song on the best album of the decade. I can't possibly say enough good things about it.

    122. Oceansize - Ornament/the Last Wrongs
If you only listen to one Oceansize song, make it this one. But really, you should listen to everything they've ever recorded.

    123. Okkervil River - Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe
Yet again, Will Sheff's impassioned vocals make this song.

    124. Audioslave - 播放Out Of Exile
    Awesome solo.

    125. Hot Chip - 播放Over And Over
    The joy of repetition.

    126. Björk - 播放Pagan Poetry
One of the best videos of the decade, for one of the best tracks.

    127. of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Too many good lyrics to list. The 12 minutes go by like 4.

    128. Regina Spektor - Pavlov's Daughter
The best of her early songs, on which her quirkiness really comes through.

    129. Joanna Newsom - 播放Peach, Plum, Pear
Best harpsichord solo since The Art of the Fugue?

    130. The Shins - Phantom Limb
Well, The Shins didn't change my life, but this is a great song.

    131. Muse - Plug In Baby
Sure, it's just an arpeggio, but I bet you've never come up with a riff this good.

    132. Coldplay - 播放Politik
This is from when Coldplay used to write good songs. Ah, those were the days.

    133. Explosions in the Sky - 播放A Poor Man's Memory
A lot of EITS songs leave me cold, but I really like this (and 播放Have You Passed Through This Night?).

    134. Ludovico Einaudi - 播放Primavera
This is the only classical song on my list - I mean, the 21st century isn't exactly known for its classical music. Einaudi obviously takes a cue from Vivaldi, because you can hear the influence of the cascading strings from the last movement of Summer (not Spring, ironically) on this track.

    135. Animal Collective - 播放The Purple Bottle
Animal Collective's lyrics are somehow obtuse and direct at the same time, especially in their love songs: "Sometimes I'm naked and thank God sometimes you're naked, well hello." The last couple minutes of this song are incredible.

    136. The Fiery Furnaces - Quay Cur
This is the first Fiery Furnaces song I heard, and I was hooked after about 30 seconds.

    137. Carla Bruni - 播放Quelqu'un m'a dit
I'm willing to bet that Michelle Obama couldn't write a song this good.

    138. Bon Iver - Re: Stacks
"This is not the sound of a new man or a crispy realization"

    139. Regina Spektor - Real Love
I don't listen to many covers, and this is the only one on my list. But damn, the crescendo at the end is soulful.

    140. Mates of State - The Re-Arranger
Again, how am I the only one who really loves Re-Arrange Us?

    141. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
The best song on the album, and it's an amazing album.

    142. Muse - Recess
Most bands would kill to have a bassline like this on an A-side or an album track, let alone a B-side.

    143. Radiohead - 播放Reckoner
Thom Yorke singing "Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore..." gives me goosebumps every time.

    144. The Strokes - 播放Reptilia
Incredibly catchy. This is the song that made me pay attention to the Strokes.

    145. Portishead - The Rip
Haunting. The keyboards and general droniness at the end combine perfectly with Beth Gibbons' vocals.

    146. Akron/Family - River
What an uplifting song. It's even more awesome live, like every Akron/Family song. (Seriously, their live show is like a big party.)

    147. Bright Eyes - Road to Joy
Okay, it's pretty lazy to use Ode to Joy as the basis for a song, but Conor Oberst does magical things with it.

    148. Islands - 播放Rough Gem
This is what cotton candy would be like in the form of music.

    149. The Mars Volta - 播放Roulette Dares (The Haunt of)
Surprisingly, since De-Loused in the Comatorium is my favourite Mars Volta album, this is the only song from it on my list. The "exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed" refrain is stunning.

    150. Au - 播放RR vs. D
This sounds like the kind of song WHY? would write, and that's a good thing. It also has pretty much the best use of handclaps in an indie song I've heard.

  • My Top 20 Album Releases of 2OO9

The last year of the first decade of the 21st century provided me with some albums that rocked my world and then some. Here's what I consider the best of the past year.

    HONORABLE MENTIONS:

    The Golden Filter

The Golden Filter is one of my favorite new acts of the year but having only released six songs over two singles (Solid Gold and THUNDERBIRD) so far, I couldn't really find a place for them on the list. The Golden Filter's unique brand of colorful, fortune-teller-esque disco is something I can definitely get down with and I predict big things for them. Their full-length debut album will be released sometime in the spring of 2010.

    Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM

Charlotte Gainsbourg is definitely on my list of favorite actresses and regulation hottie chicks that I'd bend my sexual orientation for. And her new album, with help from Beck, is exactly what a Charlotte/Beck collaboration should sound like. Sleek, sexy, polished and intriguing. Tracks like IRM, Trick Pony, and La Collectionneuse are big standouts for me. This album was released early this month in Gainsbourg's native France but the album isn't released in the US until January 26th, 2010 so I didn't include it on the list. However, if I did place it on the list, it'd probably be somewhere in the teens.

    Beach House - Teen Dream

My oh my, what do I say about this one...
Well, I think it's safe to say that Beach House is my current favorite artist of all time... the only artist that surpasses them is the genius of modern music that is Björk. Beach House's first two albums already put them at this level of adoration for me. And then along came their third album. This piece of monumental art won't be released until January 26th either so I also haven't included it on the list. But if I did, I can guarantee it'd be #1. It will most definitely be #1 on my list for 2010. And when I'm 80 years old and make a list of my favorite albums of all time, Teen Dream will definitely be in my top 3; I can say that with confidence. The entire album is absolutely gorgeous and engaging but I'd have the say the penultimate track, Real Love, is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. It's almost scary how good this song is to me. Music hasn't ever moved me like this. It's a perfect album and I can't say enough good things about it.

aaaaaaaand moving on to my Top 20 Album Releases of 2OO9:

#20: Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong

A vast improvement to their sloppy self-titled debut. Well, I guess some would say this album's sloppy as well but I guess what I'm trying to say is that it pulls it off better. Tracks like
播放The Desert and 播放The End sound tighter and more focused, while songs like 播放Can't Get Over You and 播放Before I Start To Cry show a more vulnerable side to the V Girls that we haven't seen before.

#19[: Zola Jesus - The Spoils

Zola Jesus sounds like nothing I did before. She's young (my age), hot, and her voice is seriously out of this world. The music she makes (which has been given the kinda lame genre name "Lo-Fi Goth") is dark, spooky, stealthy, and emotionally evoking. Her vocal delivery is borderline opera and can send chills down your spine. Opening track 播放Six Feet (From My Baby) is the highlight of the album in my opinion and a beautiful introduction to a truly harrowing album.

#18: Real Estate - Real Estate

Like being stoned? You'll like this album. New Jersey's Real Estate makes music that you put on while you're cruising down a coastal highway with the windows down on a perfect-temperature sunny day. It's not really anything new but it's definitely something that's pleasant on the ears... very pleasant.

#17: Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic's debut album is like having your own personal opium den. Imagine countless fluffy pillows, colorful tapestries everywhere, and seeing everything in kaleidoscope vision. That's why I love this album.

#16: Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly

Hope Sandoval has one of the most velvety, beautiful voices you'll ever hear. She could sing you the dictionary and you'd fall into a euphoric lull, just like I do when I hear her music. Her first album in eight years, Through the Devil Softly is no less gorgeous than her band's first record or the three albums from her previous band Mazzy Star. The album sounds slightly narcotic, like a haze that washes over you. 播放Satellite is sleepy enough to slip you into a coma... in a good way.

#15: Washed out - Life Of Leisure

There's nothing like kicking off your sandals at the beach on a hot summer day, burying your feet in the sand, lying back and staring into the sun until your world becomes soaked in reverb and you're kinda blind. Washed Out's debut EP is the perfect soundtrack for that activity.

    #14: St. Vincent - Actor

The cover of this album perfectly reflects the music; elegant, poised, left-field and pretty. I had a hard time getting into Annie Clark's first album but this one worked like a charm. The lyrics are engaging, to say the least, and the melodies are poignantly striking; a perfect pop album with a twist. Songs like Marrow and Save Me From What I Want would never receive radio play but have a lovely accessibility about them.

#13: Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms

Video game blips and beeps, head-bobbing hooks, distorted vocals with a little bit of LSD is what Neon Indian sounds like to me. It sound completely retro and at the same time, it sounds like the year 2020. If the song 播放Ephemeral Artery doesn't get you moving, you're probably not human.

#12: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

I was never big on AC until this album. At times, I still dismiss them as utter trash but then I listen to MPP again and am reminded that there are definitely some shards of genius in there. This album is going to be remembered as their poppiest, most accessible record. It'll also probably be remembered as their best. This album does for my ears what drugs do to your pupils. Songs like Daily Routine and Brother Sport can whip your brain up into a dizzy euphoric slush in just one listen.

#11: Cotton Jones - PARANOID COCOON

Another great album for driving on a beautiful, sunny day, this album is great from start to finish. Mellow, organic, and folky. The duo's male/female vocals really work well together and it's hard not to just chill out when you're listening to this one. I Am The Changer is one of the best songs to listen to on a warm, summer evening.

    #10: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have made quite the transformation since they emerged at the beginning of the decade. They've evolved from thrashy lo-fi punk to calculated alternative rock to... pop/electronic/but-still-rock... and I wouldn't have it any other way. In my opinion, this is the YYY's golden album so far. They've fused electronics and rock beautifully and the raw emotion that's felt in songs like 播放Soft Shock and 播放Skeletons are hard to compete with. And the cover is beyond awesome.

    #9: Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

While it doesn't posess the ornate gold-metal achievement of their previous album, this one is a great step forward in terms of their sound. Grizzly Bear's use of a wide selection of instruments provides our ears with lovely, well-crafted, shimmery pop songs. Ready, Able earns them an A+ for sure.

    #8: The xx - xx

Pitchfork was accurate when they said, "It is so fully formed and thoughtful that it feels like three or four lesser, noisier records should have preceded it." in their review of The xx's debut album. It's a focused record, it's got plenty of different shades of the same color. The record makes a quiet entrance and a quiet exit but it leaves you breathless. The sixth track, Fantasy, is the centerpiece of the album and is as effective as a scream, though the song itself is hardly a whisper.

#7: Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Natasha Kahn has stolen my heart on this one. She has crafted some music that is seriously beautiful. A perfect listen in the desert, this album is a work of art. She has fused her more acoustic style from her first record with a touch of electronica and modern pop to make a gorgeous mosaic of emotion, hope, and delicate beauty. 播放Daniel is undoubtedly one of the best songs of the year and album closer 播放The Big Sleep gave me chills like I've never felt before.

    #6: warpaint - Exquisite Corpse

This 6-song EP from newcomers Warpaint is very promising. I simply cannot wait for them to record a full-length album. It's so refreshing to hear a brand new band that can already play - we don't have to wait two or three albums for them to get really good. This EP is already down-tempo perfection and is rich like mahogany. Standouts are definitely 播放Stars and 播放Billie Holiday, the latter which concludes with the most haunting coda I've ever heard. These ladies are beautiful song-crafters and I cannot wait for more.

    #5: Telepathe - Dance Mother

Telepathe sounds like 2009. Their nine-song debut album is an unorthodox electronic endeavor and rubs me the right way, that's for sure. Opener 播放So Fine is a club-banger that's sure to be a hit at your next hipster party and Can't Stand It has a sort of ethereal beauty that is only achieved when you're standing at the top of the tallest mountain. The beats are fresh, the vocals are... interesting, and the girls are hot. What's left to be desired?

    #4: Atlas Sound - Logos

I'm a huuuuge Deerhunter fan but after hearing Atlas Sound's first solo album, I wasn't too jazzed about the follow-up. But man, talk about a step forward! Bradford Cox has outdone himself yet again. From start to finish, Cox has made a perfect pop album (spiked with painkillers, of course). It's trippy, yet accessible. 播放Washington School is what it sounds like to be robotripping, 播放Shelia couldn't be a more perfect poppy love song, and Quick Canal (w/ Laetitia Sadier) is one of the most dizzying songs I've ever heard (and I mean that in a gooooood way).

#3: Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

I am a firm believer in the theory that you cannot call yourself a fan of pop music if you don't totally love Lady GaGa. She IS pop. She is a breath of fresh air for mainstream music and I personally feel she gets ragged on slightly too much. You can't deny her vocal talent, her clothes are on-par creatively with fashion icons like Björk and Róisín Murphy, and it is scary how many catchy hooks she can fit into one song. 播放Bad Romance is GaGa's catchiest song to date and has been embedded in my head since I first heard it. The entire 8-song mini album is wonderful. A great pop record.

    #2: Peaches - I Feel Cream

I've always had a soft spot for the Peach with a hole in the middle, but she has really outdone herself on this album. She hasn't lost her raunchy signature but she's upped her game when it comes to production. The beats are extraordinary, her vocal delivery is flawless, her rhymes are tighter, and the songs are just outright catchier. Tracks like Talk To Me and Lose You even show a vulnerability that Peaches has never displayed, without losing her slickness. Without a doubt her best record.

#1: Fever Ray - Fever Ray

I have never seen a project come together quite as well as Fever Ray has. The visual imagery and music work hand in hand like a well-oiled machine and the result is stunning. This album is dark, brooding, ominous, and outright creepy. These songs have an anxious, neurotic feel to them and provide your ears with the most innovative of sounds. All ten tracks are necessary; they paint a vivid picture of modern horror. And like I said earlier, the visual aspect of the Fever Ray project is flawless as well. Check out all of her music videos and clips of her live tour; everything Fever Ray is awesome, you can't go wrong.

    Top 23 Alben 2009

    2. Antony and the Johnsons – The Crying Light

Einfach eine unwahrscheinlich schöne Scheibe. Gänsehautfaktor.

    3. Sophie Hunger – Monday's Ghost

    4. Bat for Lashes – Two Suns

Sozusagen ein Best-of-Album all unserer Lieblingssängerinnen.

    5. The Bird and the Bee – Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future

Ein unschlagbares Gute-Laune-Album. Elektronischer Pop at its best. Bei schlechter Laune einfach den 播放

    6. Dark Was The Night: A Red Hot Compilation

    7. Not Given Lightly - A Tribute To the Giant Golden Book Of New Zealand`s Alternative Music Scene

2009 war einfach ein sehr gutes Sampler-Jahr. :)

    8. The xx – xx

    9. Wild Beast – Two Dancers

    10. Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse – Dark Night Of The Soul

    11. The Flaming Lips – Embryonic

    13. The Gossip – Music For Men

    15. The Black Heart Procession – Six

    15. Built to Spill – There Is No Enemy

    16. The Big Pink – A Brief History of Love

    17. Soap&Skin – Lovetune for Vacuum

    Ein sehr intensives, berührendes Album.

    18. Masha Qrella – Speak Low

    19. Scott Matthew – There Is An Ocean That Divides

Das Album des Jahres 2009, das es mit seinem Titel "There Is An Ocean That Divides And With My Longing I Can Charge It With A Voltage Thats So Violent To Cross It Could Mean Death" ins Guinness-Buch der Rekorde geschafft hat.

    20. A Place to Bury Strangers – Exploding Head

    22. Rykarda Parasol – For Blood and Wine

    23. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions – Through The Devil Softly

    4. Antony and the Johnsons

    5. The Raveonettes
