Before I get going on my monthlies (read into that what you will), I'd just like to give a passing mention to the rather fabulous night held at the Scala by organisers Upset The Rhythm, who managed to book the DJ responsible for one of my favorite albums of last year at the venue for quite the evening out with two of my closest friends. The reason I have to mention it in passing is because the night itself was a joyous blur, the kind of night when so much good stuff was going on, musically and socially, you sort of lose your concentration with the gig itself, which happened to throw up a few surprises of its own.

Firstly, the combination of the venue (a rather weirdly constructed affair featuring all manner of staircases, passageways and Mediterranean tiling most often found all over the Costa del Sol) and the deluge of American students who had excitedly arrived to support their Mash-Up Master provided welcome…

I’ve been absent from Last.fm for a while, due to a lack of wireless at home, so I thought an accounting of my listening during the break might be worthwhile. I’ve mostly been making use of my CD/record/tape archives, which has meant mucho 80s synth-pop. When I was browsing through my records, I almost fainted when I discovered Marquee Moon, Before and After Science, and Squeezing Out Sparks, but then I remembered when and where I got them. Ah, the pleasures of being among one’s things. I may update this reckoning later, but without further ado:

I’d like to belatedly bestow Best Album of 2007 honors upon The Mary Onettes’ self-titled debut: a lovely set of Swedish synth-post-punk, with nary a non-excellent track. Like the other best debuts of the decade (A Certain Trigger, Oh Inverted World, Internal Wrangler, Lost Souls, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, Guitar Romantic, Scribble Mural Comic Journal, Fleet Foxes, the list goes on), the band’s influences (in this case: Duran Duran, The Lucy Show…

There hasn't been a huge amount of new music out recently that I've loved, so I've been exploring the rest of my music library, and along with a bit of new stuff, here's what I've been listening to lately:

Here Come The Girls by Ernie K. Doe - Advertisers really know that the way to getting an advert remembered is to put a good piece of music in there, I've been addicted to the recent Boots ad!

Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex by CSS - Another piece of music from an ad, the combination of onscreen iPod-touch-porn and this piece of music is a winner!

Just one more ad theme, honest! There was a recent ad that I found on YouTube that Sky made, shamelessly plugging their alleged eco-friendliness. Here's Joy To The World by Three Dog Night. Another nice catchy tune!

Going off the ad theme but staying on TV, music from Scrubs is always good and the new Season 7 is no exception, here's Friends And Family by Trik Turner from the episode "My Inconvenient Truth", catchy and works well with the theme of the episode.

I had to look up the lyrics to The Worst Part Is Almost Over by Elliott Smith when I heard him say "black guys always watch the clock". I thought it was out of character for Elliott Smith to make generalizations about the work ethic of those with African ancestry. Of course, that's not what he says. This is right up there with Annie Lennox saying "save me from the blacks" (Walking On Broken Glass) which also is not what she really says.

Apologies to my boyfriend. Also, my subconscious mind would like to apologize to my conscious mind.
