Amon Amarth is a viking-themed melodic death metal band from Sweden founded in 1990 in Tumba, named after a location in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The name means “Mount Doom” in Sindarin.

The five Swedish musicians are known for their songs based on Norse Mythology, with such tunes as The Arrival of The Fimbul Winter, Pursuit of Vikings and Versus the World. This is an element that originally emerged as a sub-genre of black metal known as viking metal in the early 1990s, made popular by such bands as Enslaved, although the band themselves do not actually exemplify the genre’s sound.

Formed under the name Scum, they switched to the name Amon Amarth in 1992 and released a demo recording, The Arrival of Fimbul Winter, in 1994, selling all 1000 demo discs in less than 12 hours. With the release of the album Once Sent From the Golden Hall in 1998 their popularity rose on an international level and since has brought forth multiple U.S. tours, three music videos and appearances in over 100 metal magazines.

Their latest album, With Oden on our Side was released in 2006 on September 22nd (Germany/Austria/Switzerland) / September 25th (Europe) / October 5th (Canada).

Well, 'popular' is a relative term, but I'd say that 'pop' in the general sense is used to describe bands who release singles (usually poor covers) and get them high up in the charts, and who make music that appeals to the majority of the population. As far as I can see, this applies to very little metal, and I would guess that 'pop metal' is just a term banded about by people who feel the need to demonstrate that they listen to obscure bands in order to try and get respect from other metal fans. It seems a bit silly to me, as does judging a band based on one song. *Shrug*

Yes, the song structures have become a bit simplier in the last decade, but if you listen to the earlier albums (especially the first three + Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds) you will be taught otherwise.

Fair enough. I don't know most of their music. I came here to check them out based on a friend's recommendation and I only listened to one song (Free Will Sacrifice. That song does have a very simple, predictable structure, and the artist pic above I guess made me think of power metal.

@ tihsymtae: I agree with part of what you're saying, namely the whole mainstream thing. I too, never understood people's reactions to metal bands who are mainstream. I listen to some bands who could be described as such (Trivium, Shadows Fall, DragonForce, etc.), and quite frankly, I don't give a flying fuck about what all the "uber kvlt" metalheads have to say to me about it. As for you describing AA's music, you are so off the mark my friend. Comparing their song structures to that of pop music is just an insult. They are melodic death metal for fucking crying out loud, just different from other bands as h3llb3nt_2_k1ll says. Shit, if pop music was this good, I'd be a happy camper! :P

Pop Metal?? huh! Probably you might have listened to just a song or two.. even though I disagree with the term 'Pop Metal'. They're melodic death metal yet very different from other bands in that genre such as Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and stuff.. they don't sound like Bathory, Enslaved, TYR or any of them Viking Metal bands.. still they kick some royal ass!! I have seen them live recently.. they rawk on stage!! \m/

And if you think my charts are "mainly mainstream" you need to look closer. It's true that some of the music I listen to is mainstream. But I think some mainstream music is good. And I think it's childish to avoid an artist simply because they are popular. But more than half of my top-50 are not in the Last-fm top-400. In that sense, most of what I listen to is not mainstream.

*Sigh* I wasn't denigrating them. But I think they tend to have very predictable song-structures which I associate with Pop music, and they sound like the soundtrack to a Renaissance fair which I associate with Power Metal. The vocals, I grant, are death metal vocals. But that's it. And again, I'm not denigrating them. I'm just describing.

The lyrical theme of a band doesn't define their genre. Amon Amarth is indeed (melodic) death metal. If you are looking for some viking metal, go listen to Bathory's Hammerheart.
