  • Tuesday Twenty: Top Twenty Albums of 2009

    2009年 12月 22日, 15:22 作者:amodelofcontrol

Ok, so time for my roundup of the best albums of the year.

    20
    Doves
    Kingdom Of Rust
    Heavenly

I was not a fan, particularly, of the last Doves album Some Cities (released way back in 2005), so it had been some time since I really appreciated how good this band could be. My love of the band came rushing back upon hearing the title track, which was the wistful, sad comeback single. The rest of the album was pretty much just as good - particularly the sleek sky-gazing of opener 播放Jetstream and the harmonies of 播放Spellbound. But really, this was an album full of songs that should have made this band huge. Once again, they never quite managed it, but that's not for the want of trying.

    19
    SITD
    Rot
    Accession Records

Easily their best album since their debut, the band's promise of "bone-crunching beats" was met in some style here. And it wasn't just the rhythmic backbone that was so impressive - the title track is a breathtakingly powerful dancefloor track - the songcraft was broadly of a much higher level, too, with much greater variety in the beats, the lyrics, and the tunes. The sound of a reinvigorated band, this.

    18
    Velvet Acid Christ
    The Art of Breaking Apart
    Dependent Records

Not the only comeback in this list, but perhaps the most unexpected change of direction here, that's for sure - even if it only was a part-change. Half of the album is VAC as I've known them for years - tripped-out, trance-industrial, but it's the other half that gets really interesting. A huge The Cure influence, more than anything, pervades these other tracks, along with unexpected undistorted vocals and acoustic guitars, to astounding effect. Far better than I thought this was ever going to be.

    17
    The Prodigy
    Invaders Must Die
    Take Me To The Hospital

The turnaround in this band's fortunes in the past year has been astounding. From a nice bit of nostalgia, following the awful Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned all but killing their career stone-dead, to arena-filling band once again. And this was done simply by returning to their roots. Rave synths and old-school dance influences permeate almost everything here, not to mention a knowing wink that suggests that nothing here is being taken too seriously. I may be bored of 播放Omen, but evidence recently suggests that club dancefloors are not bored of that or most of the rest of the album!

    16
    Rotersand
    Random Is Resistance
    Trisol Music Group

The single War On Error gave an idea of what was to come, and the album delivered as apparently promised - a stomping electro album bristling with political statements and righteous fury...and it was fantastic. Unlike the perhaps a little understated 1023, which never seemed to catch on despite a whole stack of great songs, this goes straight for the throat with everything made bigger and better. There are dancefloor stormers, epic pop songs, and for perhaps the first time even the ballads are brilliant. I'll even forgive them the title and lyrics to Gothic Paradise, the rest is so good...

    15
    autoclav1.1
    Where Once Were Exit Wounds
    Tympanik Audio

...where Tony Young takes a turn into post-punk, and the change suits his music well. And despite the newly-shown influence on record, otherwise it's a gradual evolution on this album of the sound that has been developed now over four albums to ever-better results. So, what's next, Tony?

    14
    Mastodon
    Crack The Skye
    reprise records

Mastodon continued their apparently unstoppable rise to the top of the metal tree with this album, a sprawling, lengthy proggy epic (seven songs, fifty-or-so-minutes) that actually contains at least one of the band's finest moments (the single Divinations, since you ask). Otherwise, it's business as usual for Mastodon - the technical ability is simply awesome, the songs are great, they are as heavy as the beast they are named after, and their quality control is pretty much unquestionable.

    13
    Assemblage 23
    Compass
    Accession Records

Tom Shear's electro juggernaut just keeps on going, with no dip in quality - in fact, at points this album is even better than Meta was - particularly in the case of career-highlight collapse, the best song Shear has perhaps ever written. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, it's not hard to see why The Poison Moon was cast out as a B-side - he clearly had too many great songs for the album!

    12
    KMFDM
    Blitz
    Metropolis Records

Twenty-five years, and a cracking way to celebrate. As I put it last week when I had Davai in my tracks of the year list, Blitz "had a whole host of storming tracks (in fact, I can't think of any filler at all other than the closer)", and not only that, the tracks with Lucia on lead vocals seemed to fit much better. Particularly when pouring scorn on the pro-gun lobby in the seething Me & My Gun, while otherwise the cover of Human League classic Being Boiled was a fascinating reworking, too. I'm not asking for another 25 years, but there is certainly a few years left in this lot yet.

    11
    The Big Pink
    A Brief History of Love
    4AD

I got into this late - only a month or two back - and I've listened to it a lot since. And yes, I love it. Shoegaze meets industrial meets pop, and comes out sounding pretty damned good. Heavy rhythms, torrents of guitars and huge, huge choruses would be nothing without some great songs, and there are loads here. Even if Dominos annoys you, give the rest of the album a chance - it's not all like that (and most of it is much, much better). Frisk really needs to be a single, though...

    10
    Necrotek
    Menschenfeind
    Vendetta Music

I wrote in my Connexion Bizarre review for this some months ago that this album was "one that wears its influences so obviously has no business twisting new and interesting sounds from such familiar raw materials in such style as this", and this comment still holds. An impressively nihilistic take on industrial, with dense soundscapes and clever samples taking centre-stage, not to mention a set of awesome remixes to round it off. And no "spookyness" or bad psy-trance beats required.

    09
    Katatonia
    Night Is The New Day
    Peaceville

This band continue to do no wrong, it seems. Little has changed musically - it's still gloomy, foreboding metal - but then when they do this so well why change things? Jonas Renkse remains the focal point as ever - his lyrics of alienation, despair and resignation fit the music perfectly, and his expressive vocals allow just a little light into the dark shadow of the music. Despite the stylings, this band remain unique and deserving of far more plaudits, perhaps, than they get.

    08
    Sunn 0)))
    Monoliths & Dimensions
    Southern Lord

A remarkably listenable album from a band who are, if I must try and describe them, ultra-heavy-ambient-drone-metal (with no drums in the usual sense). Broadening their palette for this album had incredible results - with choirs, the odd bit of percussion, god-knows how many guitars and other instruments, and the incomparable Attila Csihar providing more vocals from the pits of hell. Admittedly, many people will still hate it, but it's perhaps less divisive than THE BLACK ONE, that's for sure!

    07
    Imminent
    Cask Strength
    Ant-Zen

Ten years since the brilliant Nord, comes an album easily it's equal, and is a tour de force of rhythmic electronics. Alongside bruising tracks like Bock and Ila, comes the choral-samples-meets-quasi-breaks of gari, the whistled melodies that underpin lorsc, the unsettling calm of Cling...this is an varied album that has clearly been given time to gestate. It's not going to resurrect an entire genre, though, but that's not important right now. It is, however, a reminder of how brilliant rhythmic industrial can be in the right hands.

    06
    Manic Street Preachers
    Journal For Plague Lovers
    Columbia

I think there was a lot of trepidation when it was announced that the Manics were using the remaining lyrics left by (the now-officially proclaimed dead) Richey Edwards for their new album. It appeared to be initially suspected that this was going to be The Holy Bible MK II, but it was actually nothing of the sort. Granted, it had a similar, dry sound, and a fair number of relevant film samples, but it was nowhere near as bleak, and the music the band created around the lyrics was the freshest, most powerful and more importantly best they had done in years.

    05
    Skullduggery
    You are Here [nowhere]
    Trozoc

A chaotic, brilliantly varied album that took in seemingly as many genres and influences as it was possible to do, but somehow managed to be coherent and actually sound like a complete album. The best moments were very different - the dark lullaby of 播放Angel, and the stampede of 播放Relapse. Not perhaps to all tastes, this album, but well worth a try if you want to hear something different, that's for sure.

    04
    1349
    Revelations of the Black Flame
    Candlelight Records

The band did warn that something different was coming with their latest album, and they really weren't kidding. Rather than the furious, all-out "old school" Black Metal sound for previous albums, in conjunction with co-mixer Tom Gabriel Fischer they went for a grinding, slower sound that for much of the album was nearer dark ambient than black metal - and was an utterly enthralling and intriguing listen. The music may have been different, but the pitch black heart certainly remained. If only more bands took astonishing risks like this...

    03
    Fever Ray
    Fever Ray
    Rabid Records

Cold and pitch-black in tone - and, indeed, even darker than karin dreijer andersson's work with The Knife on Silent Shout, which was some feat. The vocals are treated to within an inch of their life for the most part, and at points it sounds as if you are intruding on Karin's fears and nightmares. Needless to say, this resulted in an extraordinary album that like so many great albums, takes more than a few listens to really appreciate it.

    02
    S.K.E.T.
    Depleted Uranium Weapons
    Hands

This act have made political statements in their instrumental rhythmic-industrial-noise before, but none with as such eloquence and fury as this. A whole concept album regarding the titular weapons, from their use in Iraq to the after effects, to calls for certain ex-world leaders to be tried for war crimes. Well-placed samples and detailed sleeve notes provide the narrative, giving facts and figures, and the music provides an elegantly precise backdrop, with thunderous highlights like 700.000 tons to wipe out humankind actually sounding like a bombing raid.

    01
    Alice in Chains
    Black Gives Way To Blue
    Virgin

Ok, so hands up who was honestly expecting this to be any good when we first heard the surviving members were working with a new singer for a new album. An inkling that we were in for something special came with the two new tracks debuted at Sonisphere in the summer, and then when the album finally arrived in late September the full force of what they had done was unleashed. Not a single note wasted, this is the sound of Jerry Cantrell and the band picking up where they left off in 1995, and making a brilliant, timeless metal album. Picking highlights is something of a pointless exercise with something this good, perhaps, but for me the woozy, anthemic 播放Check My Brain, the fantastic grind of 播放Last Of My Kind and the epic, monstrous 播放Acid Bubble (just check that riff when it emerges from the murk for the chorus) are the picks. So, not an album I was expecting to be crowning album of the year, but definitely a worthy one.

  • Call your top 30 crap

    2009年 12月 21日, 5:35 作者:uglybastard

I know doing journals like this are old and I’ve already done a journal like this before I reset my tracks 2 years ago, but I couldn’t resist. This was also for fun.....

    30. currently a 3-way tie, but I’ll go ahead and bash all of the bands that are #30….. I guess I should rename this as “call your top 32 crap”…. No screw it.

a.) CAKE- I just don’t like their cover of “播放War Pigs.”

b.) Devo- This band will always be known as an 80’s one-hit wonder,
    sadly.

c.) Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is far from their best album.

    29. Jethro Tull- They were proof of how crooked the Grammy’s were. (Note: I’m not even a big Metallica fan)

    28. Billy Joel- Compared to the music he made when he was in Attila, his music has no balls whatsoever.

    27. Alice in Chains- Black Gives Away To Blue is their worst album (but it’s still decent). Yeah, other than Layne (RIP) overdosing, I can’t really bash this band.

    26. Tegan and Sara- I feel like a lesbian every time I listen to their music. Not that I’m saying it’s bad to be one but you know…

    25. Bauhaus- Perhaps one of the first “serious” bands that made laugh uncontrollably because of the vocals.

    24. Fantômas- Make a new album already!

    23. Electric Wizard- They wish they were Black Sabbath.

    22. The Flaming Lips- I can never get high enough to fall in love with their songs.

    21. King Crimson- Some of their songs can put me to sleep, especially Moonchild.

    20. Judas Priest- They’ve made nothing better after Painkiller, excluding Turbo and Ram It Down which were just corny albums to me.

    19. Blitzen Trapper- I’m surprised they haven’t covered “播放Jackie Blue” by Ozark Mountain Daredevils (who they wish they were, along with Wilco) yet. Also, I expect to hear some of their songs in a generic teen drama movie really soon.

    18. Pixies- They still have made nothing better after Doolittle.

    17. The Rolling Stones- I know it’s been said for years now but who knew that a legendary band would turn into an overpriced mummy exhibit?

    16. The Jesus and Mary Chain- Psychocandy has to be the most overrated shoegazing album ever, next to an album I’ll get to in a moment when I reach My Bloody Valentine.

    15. The Velvet Underground- Again, Squeeze sucked hard and it’s damn good thing that the original members (especially John Cale and Lou Reed) weren’t part of it.

    14. Weezer- Man was Raditude abysmal…

    13. Boris- I missed these guys when they opened for Nine Inch Nails. Damn it! :C

    12. Dead Kennedys- Let’s face it, Jello Biafra was the back bone of this band. It was a smart idea to break up in 2008 because I don’t anybody was seeing through the remaining member’s bullshit.

    11. Queens of the Stone Age- Way to be homophobic, Josh. Although that emo(?) douche had it coming, not the remarks but that bottle that was thrown back at him.

    10. My Bloody Valentine- Isn’t Anything > Loveless (the album I was talking about in #16). Also I felt this band would’ve kicked even more ass if Dave Conway (the original vocalist) was still with them.

    9. Melvins- When I saw them at The Conservatory (not at The Diamond Ballroom), I felt they didn’t play long enough. (even though they did play 2 full sets and still kicked ass). Also, I acted like a shy, starstruck retard when I actually bought a shirt from King Buzzo himself. I can’t really bash these guys either.

    8. Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation is still far from their best album. Also, “Teenage Riot” = The “播放Freebird” of this band. (classic song though)

    7. Black Sabbath- Although I’ve said Tony Iommi carried Ozzy Osbourne’s ass along with Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, after Dio left they’ve made subpar albums ever since.

    6. The Smashing Pumpkins- Zeitgeist was their version of St. Anger.

    5. The Beatles- Perhaps the most over-whored band of 2009. no wait, ever.

    4. Modest Mouse- I’ve already said this but, ever since Good News for People Who Love Bad News, they’ve made inferior songs/albums compared to the songs/albums before.

    3. Pink Floyd- Just like King Crimson, some of their songs put me to sleep. Also they’ve made better albums than The Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, which songs from those albums (most of the time anyway) are overplayed on Classic Rock radio stations.

    2. The Brian Jonestown Massacre- This band will probably be only known for that lulzy on-stage fight at the Viper Room, after being shown on shows like “World’s Dumbest.”

    1. Bob Dylan- Simply put, his vocals can get annoying if not unintentionally hilarious.

This is just a list I've been adding to (and not taking away from) for ages now, of bands I've decided at the time deserved a place on it. Looking at some of them now, there are a few I hardly like at all any more, so it's not 100% representative of my taste, but neither are my overall charts. Perhaps they balance eachother.

  • 2009: My Top #25

    2009年 12月 17日, 14:54 作者:SometimeWorld

    #1 Sleepy Sun - Embrace
Guess I gotta thank The Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound for putting me onto this marvelous group. When I found out vocalists Rachael Williams and Bret Constantino were to record with Assemble Head on their own latest outing I thought I'd better check them out to keep me busy while i patiently waited for "When Sweet Sleep Returned". As it turned out "Embrace" caught me totally off guard, and blew me the fuck away. Better than anything i could have expected. I've been keeping tabs on them all year, checking out videos of all their performances and i gotta admit I'm a total sucker for everything they do. Ridiculously awesome riffs, lovely spacey jams. They've another new album just around the corner, and from what I've heard so far it's going to slaughter!

    #2 Sholi - Sholi
If it weren't for the now-defunct indiepassion blog i'd have never discovered this wonderful and totally unique gem. It was the first album to blow me away this year, way back in early February. Some would carelessly tag this as indie garbage but that simply isn't the case. The musicianship and songwriting is very unique, with each song comes a lovely melody as well as an excellent aggressive drive. Their style is balanced, emotive, hypnotic, intelligently composed and all the while incredibly technical. Oh, and i didn't even mention the drumming on this record. Good lord, just download and listen to the dude tear it up! - P.S. "Spy In The House of Memories" totally sounds like some modern indie/King Crimson hybrid, really fucking cool.

#3 The Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned
I've mentioned it a dozen times prior, but god damn it do love Tee Pee Records. Everything they put out is golden, and this was no exception. I was completely obsessed with Assemble Head last year when i discovered their previous record "Ekranoplan". There's just something about their sound that i can come back to again and again. Not to harp on the meaningless, but i'd unkowingly rack up 50+ spins of their albums and have them jump up into my most played here on last.fm without even knowing it (and certainly without getting sick of them). While they might not have changed it up much from album to album, it's certainly no less enjoyable. Can't wait to see what they do next. If it's more of the same i won't mind at all.

#4 Ancestors - Of Sound Mind
Ancestors' 2008 debut was one of my favourites so naturally i was keeping tabs on this baby! What we have here is essentially 4 fucking huge pieces, each clocking in at around 15 minutes - and a series of short and contrasting interludes. They've added so much to their already-scorching sound here and almost sound like a completely different band. The production is truly something to behold. I absolutely love the keys spread all over this album, the bluesy guitar solo's are very tasty as well. Running in at just over an hour usually pushes it for me, but i still didn't want this one to end. It smacked me right from the get-go. Keep an ear out for these heavy motherfuckers!

#5 The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
The Decemberists' earlier work never really clicked with me, but to be fair i don't think i ever really gave them a chance. It was because of this i was completely blown away with "Hazards", a beautiful collection of songs and recurring themes all arranged to perfection. That break down in "A Bower Scene" is one of the coolest things i've heard in a long time! Gotta give their earlier stuff a second chance asap.

#6 Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below
The buzz on this crazy bunch has been steadily picking up momentum ever since the Letterman performance earlier in the year. It seems as if everyone who caught them that night instantly fell in love with them. I managed to pick a copy up from Amazon for pocket change and now it's become one of my favourites of the year. It's big and wild, easy to sing along with, completely over the top and most importantly, it's just a really entertaining listening experience.

#7 Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
I really didn't know what to expect with this. It's good enough to hold up to the band's legacy, and at this point in time i guess that's all we can ask of it. I still don't really like "Lessons Learned" and especially "Take Her Out", but everything else holds up. "When The Sun Rose Again" is excellent. The highlight has to be the haunting "Private Hell", which one could guess narrates Layne's final days, as well as the closing title track which ends too quickly, further serving it's purpose. A fitting tribute to Layne, and a fitting swan song for the band should they choose not to continue.

#8 Greater California - All the Colors
This here's another gem i stumbled upon while browsing the aforementioned indiepassion blog. They're from Long Beach, L.A. Road trips, cookouts, sunny days and beaches, Pet Sounds and nostalgia. All that good cheesy stuff comes to mind. Produced by Ikey Owens of TMV but don't let that give you the wrong impression. This is totally melancholic and chilled. My favourite "midnight album" of the year.

#9 Imaad Wasif - The Voidist
Given Tee Pee Records' reputation as one helluva heavy label i gotta admit i was a little hesitant while reading about this Canadian fella, who is primarily known as the touring guitarist for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I decided to check out all three of his solo albums, including this, his latest. The debut was very dark and mellow which brang to mind Elliott Smith at first. In contrast, his second album "Strange Hexes" with his current backing band Two Part Beast (a modern Crazy Horse in the making) is fucking loud, and it fucking rocks! His latest "The Voidist" mixes the two elements into one great and unique record. Clearly his best so far.

#10 Balmorhea - All Is Wild, All Is Silent
Gotta be honest, I didn't think much of this after my first few listens. A few months after release i returned to it and it slowly infected my psyche. Every time i listen i imagine some wonderful film in which this would comfortably suit as a score. The landscapes of No Country & There Will Be Blood come to mind. Hell I've never even visited the US, but i sure do love Balmorhea's latest Americana-tinged release.

#11 Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Birth
Hot damn, this caught me by suprise! Absolutely love the Floyd influence. But there is really so much more going on here, hell i was half expecting Coyne No. 2 to rap along with that wicked digi-happy beat from "I Can't Get Away". The best Coyne-family release of the year! Bring on that family gathering-dsotm cover already.

    #12 A.A. Bondy - When The Devil's Loose
A.A. Bondy has been one of my favourite folk discoveries of the last few years. He obviously takes his cue from the greats, and it shows. However it's this sophomore release of his where he's really fleshed out his own familiar sound. "A Slow Parade" & "Oh The Vampyre" are two of my favourite songs of the year.

    #13 Truckfighters - Mania
These guys have been steadily chugging along as the new Kyuss over in their native Sweden for a few years now. From release to release they have tightened up a little but this here, their latest, is the real deal. They really stretched out here and it's payed off as one of the best rock albums of the year, for me anyway. It's straight up classic desert rock with a little 90's grunge thrown in for good measure. Tell me the vocal harmonies on the closer "Blackness" don't sound a hell of a lot like Cantrell and Staley! Awesome.

#14 Kings of Convenience - Declaration Of Dependence
This is wonderful late night listening. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's just as excellent at all times of the day and night. I probably won't listen to it a whole lot but when those nights come this is what I'll be reaching for. I'm liking it better than their previous so far.

#15 Hopewell - Good Good Desperation
Leave science behind and imagine for a moment if you will, a mass orgy the likes nobody has ever seen before, in which Perry Farrell and his original band of addicts somehow, someway, impregnate Jason Simon and his band, Dead Meadow. Stay with me.. ok so these four or five little messed up children grow up and form a band of their own, yeah you know it, Hopewell. The science works!

#16 Mouse On The Keys - an anxious object
Discovered this fantastic Japanese jazz band from TheSirensSound blog last year. The drumming especially is excellent. The second half of the album in particular is mind blowing. The funky 'Double Bind' has one of my favourite beats in a long long time. The next track 'Soil' cruises along at a nice pace before unleashing an absolutely incredible extended sax solo, the definitive highlight of the album for me. Good funky jazz fusion/post-rock with nice beats, a fun listen.

#17 Black Math Horseman - Wyllt
Progsychedoomic-Metal? Nah, fuck tags. But this is a welcomed fresh breath among those genres mentioned. The whole album is solid but i have to mention the closing track. Boy oh boy is it heavy. One of my favourites of the year. Lead singer Sera Timms has one hell of a possessed, demonic-like howl to her. Yes, her.

    #18 Blakroc - Blakroc
I didn't even see this one coming. I'm not the biggest fan of The Black Keys but i like what they did here and in turn i guess I gotta check out more of their work. A few of the MC's annoy me but for the most part i enjoy it all. I love the first Mos Def track, as well as the RZA & Pharoahe track the most. I enjoyed the studio videos, seeing how everyone interacted and how the project came about through it's stages. I read they are compiling all that into some kind of documentary soon, should be cool.

#19 Quest For Fire - Quest For Fire
Why is it that when i first seen this creepy artwork of a seemingly drug-fucked human being slobbering all over his/her/it's own breasts (???) I was instantly set on obtaining the album? What does that say about me? At any rate, i did notice this was on the wonderful Tee Pee Records label and knew right away of the quality waiting to be discovered. Fortunately for me, this was but one of the many awesome psych releases of '09.

    #20 Shrinebuilder - Shrinebuilder
How could this ever possibly live up to the huge expectations of most fans? I mean let's face it, to have these four influential giantlemen of all things heavy in the same room is fucking big. Having said that, if you can put all that bullshit to the side and just let this one slowly burn through, you WILL see the light! If you dig this, check out the latest Ancestors' record posted up top. Trust me on that.

#21 The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Strange, strange, strange. I gotta give 'em credit for changing it up, but good lord! All i know is after 5-10 listens of the latest Lips album i still can't quite get my head around it. Like i said, strange. One can only wonder what other kinds of strange Uncle Coyne & co will unearth to us come decade number four! I can't wait to find out.

#22 Mastodon - Crack The Skye
For one reason or another this was my introduction to the mighty Mastodon. Gotta admit this is pretty kick-ass, i don't much care for the vocals though. I see this moving up the list in time. It's been a pretty fucking heavy year though...

#23 Black Bonzo - Guillotine Drama
This was probably my most anticipated album of the year and while it certainly isn't bad, i figure i might have hyped it up too much. Nothing was going to live up to what i was expecting. Hell, i don't even know what i was expecting. I can't really fault the album.. the songs are great and the band is continually adding new and interesting dimensions to their already awesome brand of "retro" prog-rock. Gotta admit that's one god-awful cover design though. I'm just glad this band exists, to be honest.

#24 Serpent Throne - The Battle Of Old Crow
Sabbath worship at it's finest. You could probably con someone into thinking this is a lost Iommi, Geezer & Billy Ward jam record. It really is spot on.. although completely instrumental. Bottom line is while I'm listening to this album it fucking rocks. But when i'm not i tend to completely forget about it. In a way that kind of sums it up. It'd be interesting to hear these guys lay down some vocals on top, but i guess that's not what it's about.

    #25 Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Sure i knew of them and a few of their earlier hits, but until "Humbug" i had never given a shit about the Arctic Monkeys. Decided to check this out after learning of Homme's involvement. Yep, "his" sound is definitely present. This is pretty cool.

    Honourable Mentions:
    Radio Moscow - Brain Cycles
Mono - Hymn To The Immortal Wind
    Pearl Jam - Backspacer
Gösta Berlings Saga - Detta Har Hänt
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures

    Feedback/Comments:
So what do ya think folks? Feel free to comment on any shared tastes or anything else. Come on, let me have it for not ranking "Merriweather Post Pavilion" - you know you want to.

Anyway, that will do for now. Cheers.
