Given that many of the bands I like and talk about have names from other languages, I find myself often unsure how to pronounce them. Internet searches usually yield unclear instruction, or the ignorance of, "Just say it like it's spelled." Nothing is quite as good as hearing it for myself.

I decided to search band interviews for good examples, with some success. My findings are listed below. I've been compiling this list for awhile, as I've come across good sources. I try to get it directly from a band member's mouth, if possible. I figure that's the best example available.

I hope that this can be useful to other metal fans who care about this sort of thing… potentially a group effort. If you can contribute, post below. This is certainly not the first black metal list I've made, but this is the first that I have decided to use a different format. Rather than listing all my favorite black metal albums in order of preference, I'm listing these albums in groups, which are split according to subjective preference and how essential they are to the genre. Think of this as an overview of black metal, rather than a favorites list. If time allows, I'll add some mini-reviews and album covers in the future.

Something is said to be transcendent when it exceeds the ordinary and even the best, yet this form of transcendence is a perverted caricature. Man no longer knows where his place in the universe is; his existence is no longer derived from something higher than himself. More specifically, what is greater than him today is but a machine that crushes, dissects, exploits and uses him, thus making a production tool out of him. Man is looked upon from a mechanical point of view: brain, neurons, hormones, genes, and a body devoid of breath and energy. Considered as such, Man lost any reason to exist; suicides are increasing in all environments. Human life no longer has value.

Philosophical questions – Who am I? Where am I? Where am I going? – are shunned questions today; questions considered no longer valid, which make us smile and do not deserve attention. In a world where time is money, asking such questions is a waste of time.
