Sonmi451 is Bernard Zwijzen, creating his own blend of minimal, soundscape-laden atmospheric electronics in the city of hasselt, belgium.

Sonmi451 is a character from David Mitchell's novel "Cloud Altas" who works as a slave-robot in an underground dinerplace, in a society called Nea So Copros in the distant future. It's quite a sympathetic humanoïd, who's aspiring efforts to become enlightened are brutally oppressed by a totalitarian, consumer-driven regime.

If you insist on labeling the music you might say it bears resemblance to the more atmospheric stuff that is released through labels like Mille Plateaux, Scape, Kompakt, etc... Artists I respect are a.o. Jan Jelinek, Biosphere, Shuttle 358, Thilman Ehrhorn, Twerk/Shawn Hatfield, Aeroc/Geoff White and Akufen/Marc Leclair...

Wooo! Thanks to everyone who came down last night for Bzangy at Bar Lisi, braving the traditional British summertime torrential storms. You're all lovely, lovely people!

I got loads of great requests too, so much that I even broke my own rules and played a band more than once - see if you cant spot it in the playlist below. (Consequently, there's a bit more older stuff than usual but I still played a hefty slab of 2008 freshness :-) )

Again, I'm so chuffed there seems to be an audience in Derby for new music, whatever the genre. And also for the mad, old tunes I can't resist slipping in. I played quite a few soundtrack choices last night as it seemed to fit the weather outside. :-)

You know, every once in a while a hip hop album comes along that makes me happy. I mean really happy. Tonight's best new track is off such an album: 'The Know How' by The Upstarts. 'Got What It Takes' melds a deliciously liquid jazz guitar riff over a kickass beat and then... well, the rapping matches up to the excellent music. If this group aren't topping the charts in a couple of years, I'd be very surprised.

Like Devo's version of 'Satisfaction,' The Slits' version of 'Grapevine' is a thing of pure joy. The thrumming, rubbery bassline, the marvellously free singing, the energy! It's got to be one of my fave cover versions ever by one of the most original, challenging and genuinely alternative bands ever. If you don't have any Slits in your collection, get some now!
