1. ayumi hamasaki - It's surprising to me that she's #1 this year, because I always used to hate her music. I guess the problem was that I never gave her a chance. Her music is wonderful. She blends all types of music in perfectly amazing ways. Her voice is something to hear, but it's undoubtedly very powerful and full of spirit. Her lyrics and the honesty she puts forth really connect with me and a lot of people, so that's why she's been my favorite this year.

With its smooth vocals and relaxing melody, ai otsuka's "HEART" captured me right away. There's something utterly enchanting about this song. Though at first listen the song itself sounds somewhat wistful and young ("I want to see you; I want to see you right now"), there's a deeper story to this island-sounding song; lines such as "In between the fireworks, as I closed my eyes, I could quietly see it in the dark...it's tickling my heart [...]" convey a more mature love. It definitely outshines "PEACH" on the "PEACH/HEART" single.
