The only movie on that list I haven't seen is Scarface, but that's because I refuse to. I'm not nearly gangster enough to appreciate it. I own Ghost World, but I didn't really dig it the first time I watched it. Perhaps I should give it another chance!

it's my fave book of all time. if you try to read it, don't give up, it starts out tame and intentionally dry, and progressively gets more and more insane. It's a study in the decomposition of the human mind and morality, replete with grammatical decay unfolding along the books plotline (as in the writing gets more and more obtuse and fractured as the book's course carries on)

    aka it's BADASS!

The Fellowship of the Ring is, by far and large, the superior Lord of the Rings movie. As much as I love the trilogy, I thought "Return of the King" wasn't as good as its precursors. I know I've basically isolated myself by saying that and that there's a good chance I'll be tarred'n'feathered by Peter Jackson's fanboys. Maybe I should read the books, maybe not. That reminds me of Clerks II (which I watched for the first time last night and loved! My friends thought it was one of the worst movies they've ever seen. Pity how comedy is wasted on the ignorant).

I almost put Pulp Fiction on my list, as it's nearly flawless. The only downside to that movie is Bruce Willis' storyline. I didn't like it, it bored me. However, I do hold Quentin Tarantino in the highest of regards.

Reservoir dogs is barely not as good as pulp fiction. The ear cutting off scene alone makes it a classic. Steeler's Wheel playing in the background, the psycho dude dancing. shit manz. that crqp is classy.

That, quite possibly, may be my favorite movie scene. Ever. Either that or any scene in The Royal Tenenbaums. Gahd, I love that movie. Y'know, I love Wes Anderson in a sexual "I want a relationship with you" kind of way. And I'm not even gay. Go figure.

Speaking of Tarantino, though, do not watch Jackie Brown unless you already have. It gives the guy a bad name. Kill Bill is an entirely different story. That movie kicks all imaginable ass.

    way oldschool! very nice!

I think I neglected to put lost in translation on mine, definitely a top ten movie for me. Also, Natural Born Killers has officially replaced nacho libre/life aquatic for my number one fave of all times.

I'm glad you (and I hate what I'm about to say) "got" Natural Born Killers. The first time I watched it, I thought it was just some big experiment to see how much violence could be glorified in a single film. After watching it for a second time, I finally understood why Oliver Stone made it: to show HOW the media glorifies violence, not his film. Of course, he took his point as far as he could and for that, I totally respect his filmmaking. Plus, all of the different cameras used in the movie keeps me on the edge of my seat (haha, I sound like such a nerd).

Y'know, I have Lost in Translation, but have never watched it. I've heard almost nothing but positive things about it. Perhaps I'll give it a watch today.

    Jake, check out these:
    -American History X
-Boogie Nights (despite what you may have heard, it is NOT a porno)
-there are more, but I can't think.

hahah boogie nights is 'sposed ta be amazin'. I feel like American History X has become overrated, much like Fight Club, and not just because they both feature what's his name, so I've avoided it. I should probably watch it though.

The beauty of "Natural Born Killers" to me was totally not the awesome point about violence in the media (although that was a nice touch). I loved the psychedelic poetry of it, and the trash-ville American vibe. Just one big Jim Morrison bender gone horribly wrong.

Gahdz, Edward Norton is my favorite actor.

Fight Club is overrated. Critics dogged it -- and later praised it... not sure what happened there -- and all teenaged males list it as their favorite because it's essentially, as Roger Ebert put it, "macho porn". I'm pretty sure there are guys who get off to the violence and stuff in it, which is kind of creepy. Nevertheless, it's been basically my favorite movie since the first time I saw it. It was eye-opening and totally enthralling and I wanted to do mischieveous things and blow up computers to start from zero again. I don't know, it just made sense to my rebellious self at the time and I've loved it ever since.

You should totally watch American History X. That movie'll blow yo' brainz. Hands down the best acting I've ever seen in a movie. Norton is so fucking scary in it and it's very uncomfortable to watch, but again, you're right in it becoming overrated. I think a lot of people, d00dz mostly, watch it and go "ah, I can't wait for that curb-stomping shit, that'll be killer". I have faith in your ability to watch a movie and actually get something out of it or appreciate for its beauty rather than just the gore or whathaveyou, if that makes sense.

I can lend you both if you'd like.

    OH and the Illusionist :)

  • Well, since old threads are being rezzed.
My list shifts all the time, but here's my best shot:

    The History Boys
    The Darjeeling Limited
    Yellow Submarine
    Singin' In The Rain
    Citizen Kane
    Hot Fuzz
    Maurice
    Wilde
    Back to the Future
    Tristram Shandy
    Brokeback Mountain

And I recently saw Bedazzled (the original) and am crushing on it pretty hard, so chances are good of it becoming one of my Favourites.

The Prodcuers (1968 version) is my fav movie of all time. ^_^

  • Man bites dog
    Oldboy
    Brazil
    King of Kong
    Boy who could fly
    Bugsy Malone
    Kill Bill
    Kite
    Ninja Scroll
    Amadeus
    A Boy and His Dog
    Dead Man
    Calamari Wrestler
    Branded To Kill
    12 Angry Men
    Kung Fu Hustle
    Billy Liar

  • Mmmm... lists

    The Red Shoes
    Beckett
    A Clockwork Orange
    Eternal Sunshine
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Memento
    Wild Strawberries
    Amelie
    Happiness
    Leon, The Professional

I would also recommend the novel of American Psycho over the film... the film is terribly weak by comparison, In my humble opinion.

  • Right, I am going to list the first 10 movies that come to mind as ones I like... I can't guarantee they're my faves, cos if I haven't seen it in a while, I've probably forgotten about it... Anyway, enough ranting and justification... on to it:

*UHF (for those who don't know - Weird Al Yancovic's movie)
    *Hot Fuzz
    *Snatch
    *Ladyhawke
    *The Princess Bride
*Labrynth (I think the last 3 just gave away my age)
*Velvet Goldmine (though I will admit to not totally "getting" it... I just love the music, etc).
*Mallrats (and the rest, but this is my fave Kevin Smith)
*Encino Man (aka California Man outside the US - yes, I am a girly-girl and fancy Michael DeLuise - I do not apologise)
*Mrs Winterbourne (my guilty pleasure... I don't like many sappy movies, but this I like... it's the Tango, I tell you!)

So, those are basically the 10 DVDs in my collection that I would hate to lose/scratch.

Oh! I just remembered that I love "Time & Tide", but as I don't own it on DVD yet, I forgot it, see... told ya I would. Oh, "City Hunter"! I missed that on my scan on my DVD library... sigh. Too many cool movies, I just can't rank them. Depends what I feel like watching at the time.

    Show me the rhythm!
