    Unity

How are you guys liking this change?

At first I hated it, and to top things off, after a fresh 11.10 install, Ubuntu wouldn't recognize my multiple screens. So I simply switched to Fedora, determined to abandon Ubuntu.

But, long story short, a week after this I was "forced" to use 11.10 for a few days on a old computer, fixed the problems I was having, and started to actually like Unity.

  • I was one of the few to embrace Unity from the very beginning. So much so that I installed the beta of 11.04 the moment it became available.

Because I love dock interfaces, as opposed to a traditional taskbar. Before Natty I was running Linux Mint under GNOME 2, using AWN. So when Unity came out, I jumped on it.

And, after using it for a while now, both in 11.04 and 11.10, I do really like it. I don't like how bloated it is compared to the other Linux DE's out there, and how it tends to seriously disagree with the FGRLX drivers on my laptop, but other than that... I really prefer it over GNOME 2 and GNOME 3.

Unity might be fine for some people, but for me it's just terrible. And definitely not suitable for the small screen my netbook has. A significantly larger amount of time is needed to perform certain tasks and Unity is not as configurable as GNOME 2.

My verdict: No, thanks. I'd rather stay with GNOME 2. Or XFCE. Or LXDE. Or Openbox, if I feel like going minimalist :] (And yes, I know Openbox is not a DE.)

I'm not saying Unity is bad overall. It's just not what I expect of a Desktop Environment. Others might find it quite enjoyable - kudos to them! ;)

  • I hate both, gnome 3 and unity.
i'm one of the ppl going minimalist now.
XFCE on both, notebook and desktop.

Additional pro: the xubuntu artworks look better then the ubuntu artworks. :>

  • For those who dilike gnome3 and/or unity... or, actually, everyone, honestly. Who here has tried the new Cinnamon desktop that the Linux Mint team came out with recently? Anyone like that more or less in comparison? I'm pretty curious myself.

  • I didn't like Unity at all, and have moved to Mint. (Where I am using the "Gnome Classic" desktop.)

For me Unity was unworkable from the beginning and I hated that I couldn't immediately see all open windows, so I switched to Xubuntu. I like XFCE because it's a perfectly ordinary efficient desktop, that is also configurable and nice looking. Because I read a lot about it, I also tried Mint with Mate, but it seemed not well thought through and bloated.
