    Perfect song to introduce Tool?

Tool was introduced to me by my friend with Eulogy. This was at least 5 years ago when I listened to more "lighter" stuff than nowadays. Eulogy's "slow" start and bad quality of the downloaded mp3 left me empty handed. I really didn't give it a shot or tried to like it, just dumbed it.

Times have changed and now the type of music Tool makes has really taken a hold of me. I can't remember how I learned to like the band but the process surely took some time.

Now I've been trying to "sell" Tool to some of my friends. Only one of them has in some level learned to like them while the other's did as I in the past, dumbed them. My inroducing songs have been Eulogy, Schism, Vicarious and Jambi (if I remember correctly).

So I liked to ask you what was your first song heard from Tool and did things "click" right away? And if you have introduced Tool to someone you know, what song did you use?

Or do you believe it doesn't matter which song you choose if you like the type of music?

My friend literally was forcing me to listen to tool for several month and I just didn't want to... and 3 years ago he burnt all of their stuff on mp3 cd with some other music..and when I heard "sweat" as a first song i just loved their sound and that was it...
But if you want to represent it to other, who are not in that sound, try "Sober","Schism", "46 & 2", "The Pot"...
And if you're showing lyrics then try also "Eulogy" and "Hooker with a penis"(it's not as deep as the other songs, but lyrics are interesting for the beginner listener)

Silence is as golden as piss...

I remember my cousin talking about the lyrics in "Aenema" and he played that song for me. I just remember loving the vocals and how they were different from anything else I heard. I was young at the time so I didn't actually check much else out until years later.

I agree with the four songs Lateralu5 mentioned for someone new to Tool.

  • Picking a single track is hard. I would have to say "Ænema." I would prefer to introduce them with the entire album, though. I know I've been introduced to bands with single tracks and hated them because I listened to them out of the context of the entire album. Then I go back only to find that I actually like what the band has to offer. That's what happened to me with Opeth when someone suggested the "Blackwater Park" track. "The Drapery Falls" would've been a better choice from that album.

  • the pot and schism were the first songs i knew and liked. then came aenema and i was totally stunned by its lyrics. next song i knew was stinkfist which i totally loved and knew after, that this band is just genious. thats how it started for me..

"Evil thriumphs when good men do nothing."

I got to know TOOL through radio, really (Stinkfist single). I think the choice of songs to introduce people to TOOL depends on their musical taste: if they are into more 'light' music, Aenema is the best; more heavy listeners may be more appealed by Lateralus... Also, as theGabriel points out, it's better to introduce them with an entire album. They should really experience the whole album...

Yeah, introducing with a whole album is always better but it's harder to get someone to really concentrate or devote to a totally strange album than one single track.

As I think of it, I used to listen "chart music", music that is played a lot in the radio and tv, not really complete albums at all. Nowadays I don't really appreciate single hits and try to judge bands by their albums. But of course I got to hear something (clips from last.fm or free mp3's for example) from the band before trying the album.

Okay, and gmareels claimed that Aenema for 'light' music fans and Lateralus for 'heavy', what do other's think? When I try a new band I usually pick the most popular or latest album.

  • i find aenima more heavy and laterlaus more light.

this amy be crazy, but i think the song of theirs that is most introductory and typical to thier music is Vicarious.

it's long and progressive, but has a verse chorus structure, great guitar and bass, and an extremely heavy side.

    Lemmy and Cliff.

it's all about Lemmy and Cliff.

I always pick The Grudge, Ænema or Lateralus to indroduce Tool to someone, and so far so good.

  • Quitte ou double

that's funny and amazing how the same thing keeps going on and on with tool.

every tool lover tries to “convert“ his friends and relatives to listening to this band

    i tried different approches.
the catchy stuff, the deep mellow tunes, the old stuff .. there's no rule

i agree with anttilm when he says that a whole album is a better introduction than a single song but it's a make-or-break

i sometimes feel jealous when someone just discovers the band !
i just lent Lateralus to a friend of mine (and literally compelled him to listen to it ^^).
after a few days he was really impressed by the album and i was thinking “damn bastard, so much left for him to discover :)“

it depends on the person actually
but the most annoying is when they simply consider it as “just another cool band“

Most of my friends are into math rock, so I go with "The Grudge" or something like that.

    Hej
  • a friend of mine sent schism.another friend played lateralus right in front of my eyes.

    for an easy listener:

parabola (one of the most air played songs, still i found it amazing after several months of putting it sideways.)

    right in two

for the massive and greater and experienced ears:

    third eye
    the patient
    lateralus
    eulogy
    triad
10000 days (wings for mary part 2)
    rosetta stoned
    reflection
    schism

well, always hard to choose.i bet some are missing in my brain xD

Well i started off with Sober and Schism, but i think the song i first really liked of Tool's would be Parabola (without Parabol... I only had Parabola).
At that point I thought "Tool are good, I'll look into them more". I got Eulogy, and i was forever sold.

So basically, i recommend starting off with something more accessible, a casual listen. Then move onto one of the more epic and progressive songs (Eulogy, The Grudge, Lateralus, Third Eye, Disposition/Reflection/Triad, Wings, or Rosetta Stoned)

Lateralus. not the song, the album. it's by far the best album i've ever heard in my entire life (better even than In the Court of the Crimson King). if you listen to that and don't like it, then you won't like Tool.

So far it seems that Aenima would be the album and Schism the song to begin with. Schism is also popular in the "first song heard/liked from Tool" -category. Can we assume from these things that most of the last.fm Tool fans have started to listen the band in the Aenima era?

I would also like to know is the first "loved" song still your number one favourite? I can't remember which song got me back to Tool but Eulogy (my first heard song) is one of my biggest favourites currently.

sayKedelik: I think I would be happy if people could easily adapt Tool to their musical taste or something. But on the other hand I don't like the idea of "just another cool band" either. But on the third hand I can't expect people to automatically adore the band or raise it above other bands. One of the best things in music is to discover and learn to like new bands/new kind of music on your own, or at least that's what I think.

deutschebag17: If I like Tool am I forced to like 'In the Court of the Crimson King'? (I think I'm going to try that album some day...)

My first (Ænema) is my second favorite Tool song though it's practically equal with my favorite, Eulogy.

you're not forced to like anything, and King Crimson is a completely different beast than Tool. but it's still really damn good

I agree that schism is a good song to tell people about because it's very accessable. telling people to listen to, say, Disposition/Reflection/Triad or Pushit live would probably scare people away even though they're by far the best two songs tool has written.

  • My friend was Tool listener and I asked him to give me a few names of Tool's songs as I was really anxious to discover new music at the time. First attempt to listen to them was kinda failed, but the song that do the trick was actually Pushit followed by Third Eye. Just looks like I love long and progressive tracks (but didn't realize it ever before!), so going with more "normal" songs wouldn't work for me.

It depends on the type of music the person usually listens to.
If they are into loud, screamy music, I'd recommend "Ticks and Leeches" or "The Grudge."
If they like a less hard rock, I'd tell them to listen to "Sober" or maybe "Sweat."
But if they are looking for something unique and different, "Reflection/Triad" and "Third Eye" would be my choice. :)

My first Tool song was either "Sober" or "Opiate." I can't remember anymore.
