  • This week's forage

    • Haale Go to her website immediately and download her four killer tracks. I heard Haale on the terrestrial radio last night and she blew me away. She nails the sweet spot between world and trance and ambient, but with real instruments and actual passion. Yum.
    • Don Byron Still enjoying his Lester Young-inspired album from year before last, Ivey-Divey
    • Randy Weston Randy is coming to town tomorrow night; everybody should know him.

  • Month of May esoteric recos

    • Von Freeman has only 34 listeners on last. And he's a great jazz player, too.
    • Edward Meeker is a recording artist from the early, early part of the 20th century. I like I'm getting ready for my mother-in-law as a good example of a nice funny, rollicking song. Since it's as old as the hills, you can download it here.
    • Mali Twist is the track by Boubacar Traoré, one of those great radio presences from Radiodiffusion et Télévision du Mali from the late sixties. "Mali Twist" is his theme song, but the whole album that came out on CD a while back, Je chanterai pour toi is pretty special.

Von Freeman: last of a unique breed

Man, he's got technique & style!

Didn't he go to LaSalle High School in Chicago, whose music department produced such greats of the sax like John Gilmore?

I got to see Gilmore live several times, and it was a blast to see him playing in the style of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster.

Von F. can do that, too.

I need to brush up on Von. I don't have any of his recordings, currently, with the exception of some misplaced cassette tapes.

    Thanks!

    Oooh!

I saw Black Randy live in concert many times.
He was amazing. I enjoyed chatting with him about Sun Ra, and other related topics.

Has to be something with wide range; I guess island picks..being stuck with nothing else but the complete catalogue of these three would keep me busy for a while.

    the truth is...

that anything featuring Ed Blackwell on drums &/or percussion is very nice indeed.

Ok, I'll give you three bands/artists that I recently found and which I liked/like:

    Liquid Liquid

    Thighpaulsandra

    Spring Heel Jack

that's it... except for the fact that I could easily add something like 200 more artists :P

I'm actually quite pleased to come across this, because the only artists I've heard of are really very good, if you ask me.

    My own contribution:

    Death Ambient

    World's End Girlfriend

    Etant Donnés

  • concerning the artists

oh, of course I can clarify which genres the artists are involved in. it is as follows:

    Liquid Liquid: post-funk/post-punk/experimental

    Thighpaulsandra: experimental, post-industrial, ambient

Spring Heel Jack: experimental drum'n'bass, involving free jazz in later years.

as said before, most of the bands/artists coming up here are really great, as are yours Dedalus. Both Death Ambient and World's End Girlfried are really nice. Haven't heard Etant Donnés though, is it any good?

My recent obsession. I don't know how you would label them.
They've worked with Genesis P-Orridge and Lydia Lunch, that kind of art house post-industrial
That was a mistag, though, I found out the other day.

  • "Only 3"? No way, at least 20 favourite bands i need in my life, and i'm happy.

If you thought for yourself others wouldn't have to.
