"The Old Masters Of Electronic Music" group, time for a change?

  • "The Old Masters Of Electronic Music" group, time for a change?

Until now this group only handled with a few artists, particularly artists which had a great impact on the development of electronic music from approximately 1975-1985 (where many electronic music genres have their roots).
At that time electronic music (+ equipment) developed extremely, a huge variety of new music genres and styles where created and synthesized music became really popular.
Most people associate early electronic music with this period of time, that’s why this group name was chosen.

But as the history of electronic music starts at a much earlier decade of time, criticism regarding to our groups name increase(also a legetimate claim in my eyes)

So my dear last.fm brothers and sisters, what is your opinion about this concern and what would you like to see changed in this group (e.g. artist connections, time periods …)

Post your ideas, critics or wishes here.

  • I was there in '75 - all Analog

I was there in '75 , all analog, but in '75 i felt like the new kid on the block. So i just absorbed everything i could from the Masters then and silently went about my daily recording. When digital moved in, the general consensus at the time was: " Hey old man, analog is out. It's all digital so put your analog monsters in the closet".
Then i met Phillip Glass, and he told me something that put 'everything in it's right place' . He said: " I really love your work! The machines we use are simply that - They are machines; they're our tools. Use your tools well, like you are doing, now, But in the end, it's the composition that counts. Keep doing what you're doing; this is solid work. Don't forget that."
I didn't forget. I work hard on my Compositions and Arrangements. Note by Fr-king note. But i also beat the Hell out of my Synths. Treat them rough and make those machines cry.
Live and let live; keep this Electronic world alive; young and old. Listen and learn from everyone you bloody well can.
This new release, "Music For SeX" is 90% analog. Including the dinosaur multi-track Reel to Reels; the tape heads are still smoking.
cheers, and drop by for a listen. Glad you are ALL here!

This quote, I believe, sums up what this group should be about.

I appreciate it and I hope everyone else does.

"psyche and wolfsheim (both good synth pop bands circa 1980's) should be connected artists , Plus Alvin Lucier, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, and Iannis Xenakis (experiential, avante garde composers)."

    @FUBAR22
no, Wolfsheim are no "old" masters, they emerged in the late 80s. And even being a good synthpop band of the 80s doesn't make Psyche a reference for this group. They've been heavily influenced by other earlier bands, being in a second wave of bands...

I don't really care what "wave" they are from, all I know is they've had an influence on me. Preferring whoever came first in electronic music is really pointless, in my opinion. Electronic music shouldn't be "dated", especially now when there are so many bands past & present.

P.S. I understand the point of this group is to find the roots of electronic music. Those two synth-pop bands definitely aren't on the top of my list, and I know they can't be considered old masters. This kind of music is such a broad, many faceted genre. Though the earliest "experimenters" with electronic music are important, I think musicians who pioneered the many different styles should be counted.
