your ten favourite ride songs

  • your ten favourite ride songs

i know it's very hard to nail it down to ten songs. but this would be my "top ten" at the moment:

    - Sennen
    - Taste
    - Like A Daydream
    - Chelsea Girl
    - Close My Eyes
    - Unfamiliar
    - Mouse Trap
    - Time Machine
    - In A Different Place
    - Dreams Burn Down

very cruel to leave "Today" or "Polar Bear" out of this list... not to mention "Vapour Trail". but they could fit in tomorrow, already.

    what are your thoughts?

    Hm... I'd say:
    - Time Machine
    - Cool Your Boots
    - Decay
    - Vapour Trail
    - Here And Now
    - Unfamiliar
    - Like A Daydream
    - Dreams Burn Down
    - Chrome Waves
    - In A Different Place

... but it's too hard to chose. I'd add Nowhere, Taste, Kaleidoscope, Polar Bear, etc., if I could...

  • that's easy:-))
    going blank again
    stampede
    LTAB
    seagull
    dreams burn down
    like a daydream
    here and now
    in a different place
    taste
    and killer cover of severance

  • Dammit, thats always a hard one, no matter what band, but hey i'll give it a try.

right now my top 10 Ride songs are -

    - Only Now
    - Birdman
    - Black Night Crash
    - Perfect Time
    - Dreams Burn Down
    - Kaliedascope

    1. Leave Them All Behind. I first bought GBA back around 1994 or 1995. Having already gotten Smile and Nowhere, I was nervous that this one wouldn't be as good. As a fan of snyth-rock songs like Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who and Sproston Green by The Charlatans, LTAB turned me from a person who liked RIDE into a fan. The combination of two rhythm guitars, the occasional acoustic guitar and the synth-beat is wonderful. At the end of the song, there is this explosion of a million distorted guitars screaming in pain while Loz and Steve keep the beat and the Synth remains on auto-play.

    2. Mouse Trap. All three versions of this song (GBA / Live / BBC) are great in my opinion. I really enjoy the idea of two rhythm guitars acting like duelling lead guitars - except with strumming replacing individual strings. I also love the way in which Mark's guitar (which is the second one to enter the song) seems to act as a foundation for Andy's louder, more distinct strumming. "Lead-guitarlessness" is a difficult thing to achieve properly, and RIDE does it here expertly.

    3. Chelsea Girl. This was the first RIDE song I ever heard. I remember the joy of putting Smile into the CD player, putting the headphones on and putting the volume up so high that the screaming feedback at the end of the song would occasionally lead to ringing in my ears. Of course, I don't do that today because I think my hearing has been slightly damaged by listening to too much loud music in headphones in my youth - especially Chelsea Girl. It's a pity that the song sounds soft and murky at any other volume.

    4. Black Nite Crash. I have no idea what it is about this song that appeals to me. Again its the idea of duelling rhythm guitars but the sound is very clean. The only decent song to come out of Tarantula.

    5. Seagull. This has always been a favourite. There's something about this song that reminds me of a chainsaw with a wooden leg, plodding along loudly but not as quickly as you expect.

    6. Nowhere (live version). The studio version on GBA is fine, but it was when I first listened to Live_at_Reading that this song got me. Wah wah pedals everywhere, feedback everywhere, a crowd screaming everywhere...

    7. Grasshopper. Long and ponderous, yet it is the song which, to me, show just how good a drummer Loz is. Very few RIDE songs showcase Loz's talent like this one (maybe Stampede as well).

    8. Coming up for Air (performance). 31 minutes and 48 seconds of joy. No one singing, the band simply plays around to see what they can do. Andy takes a break from Oasis and returns to a guitar while Mark seems to be fuzzing his guitar around everywhere. Loz and Steve just keep doing what they always did while the two guitarists indulge themselves in a jamming overdose to see which one can out-wah-wah the other. Brilliant.

    9. Birdman (BBC). For whatever reason, the Birdman which appears on the BBC album seems more complete, more tightly joined that the one on Carnival of Light. Moreover, the song, played for Alan Peel, retains a Shoegazing edge while the COL one seems devoid of such influences.

    10. Vapour Trail. There is no other RIDE song like it. I vaguely remember watching the music video for this back in 1990 when all things RIDE were unfamiliar to me (pun intended). In many ways the song is more like the Dream Pop and Shoegazing of other bands than anything else RIDE created.

  • ok, here goes. in no particular order (apart from the first 2)

    Sennen
    Dreams Burn Down
    Polar Bear
    Leave Them All Behind
    Furthest Sense
    Time of her Time
    1000 miles
    Unfamiliar
    Seagull
    OX4

A thankless task and subject to change ;-)

  • Here and Now
    Like a Daydream
    Seagull
    Leave Them All Behind
    Drive Blind
    Time of Her Time
    Grasshopper
    Time Machine
    Not fazed
    Polar Bear

That's what I felt right now anyway.
All pretty inconsistent except for Here And Now.

(I really really would have wanted to include their cover of "Severance" but since it's "just" a cover...)
