meaning of Contemporary Classical, namely the true classical music of our era !

what defines ?

"classical" in art and in music particularly refers to a specific style and a period in
time as well.

by style : "classical music" refers to a perceived apex in musical development. as
'art music', it's distinguished from traditional or popular music by its evolved and
perfectionized common practice, setting high standards for taste and the skills of
composers and performers. this holds for Eastern and Western classical music as
well.

by period : in the West, the term "classical music" appeared at the early 19th
century in order to canonize roughly the art music from Bach to Beethoven,
excluding the 'early music' of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. more sharply,
the Baroque period is exluded as well, and "classical" refers to the Viennese
'classical era' of Haydn and Mozart. with this definition, classical music is not
polyphonic but relies on a leading melodic line, on tonality, on an established
orchestral or soloistic instrumentation without improvisation, on a well-defined
structure of its musical works (e.g. sonata form). the post-classical Romantic era of
the 19th century may be regarded as an exaggeration of the classical virtues, but
with tendencies of destruction (impressionism).

main characteristics of classical music / style

1. a melody line supported by chordal accompaniment (homophony)
2. clean style with clear divisions between parts
3. bright contrasts and color, polished and elegant character
4. simplicity rather than complexity
5. emphasis on dynamics and phrasing
6. established forms (sonata, symphony, concerto, serenade, string quartet)
7. solo concertos instead of baroque concerto grosso
8. expressiveness and formal structure are held in balance
9. variety and contrast within a piece, change of mood and timbre
10. predominantly large orchestration, but also solo works

that said, "classical" is an inappropriate term for modernist and avant-garde
music of the 20th century (we have another Mothership for that). in order to
cultivate the true classical standard, this Mothership features composers and
performers who actually stay in the realm of the true classical style, of course
incorporating modern traditional and popular trends, but without destructing the
classical ideal. and we must admit the mainstream compatibility of this kind of
music, especially with neo-romantic influences. we hear it in films, we hear it in
commercials. contemporary classical is popular because it's deep, and it's beautiful.

this is not another group on last.fm. this is the Mothership. we don't feature all the
pseudo-classical "new age" or so-called "medieval" and "neoclassical" music that is
even more popular. and we mean "contemporary" seriously. composers who are
dead since 50 years are not contemporary. is the
classical music of our time (21st century until back to around 1975). and we don't
ignore the rich impulses of non-western classical music. makes sense ?
