  Also, I'd say that it was Rick Wright, not Gilmour, that made the band awesome. If only Rick had gotten more control, rather than less, at around the time of Wish You Were Here...

  Yeah, he created and named the band as it was with Piper. PF was The Tea Set led by Syd. Whether that means he actually created the band or not... I'm sure.

  Actually, SpiritOfYetaxa, I think Syd does have a claim to say that he created "Pink Floyd". Here's an extract from Wikipedia: . .. ... . ."It was during Dennis's tenure that the band were first referred to as "The Pink Floyd Sound", created by Barrett on the spur of the moment when he discovered that another band, also named The Tea Set, were to perform at one of their gigs. (The name is derived from the given names of two blues musicians whose Piedmont blues records Barrett had in his collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council)!"

  Pink Floyd is one of the few bands where every single member can be considered a vital part of the whole, but I think it's pretty obvious for anyone who's listened to PF that it was Gilmour's guitar playing that brought the band's sound to a completely new dimension. While Syd Barrett's music was ahead of his time and it laid the foundation for Floyd, at the end of the day he wasn't around for very long and we can only speculate what heights his songwriting would have reached if he didn't cripple himself with drugs.

  Obviously the entire band gets credit and without one of them floyd would never have been what they are today. I think the message here is that Syd brought everyone together, created the concept, and then due to mental problems was unable to carry on as frontman. When Gilmour stepped in he brought an entirely different sound to floyd that syd would not have been able to create. Piper is fantastic and waaay ahead of its time, but the guitar work in Echoes, Shine on, Time, atom heart mother suite, etc (in my opinion) puts gilmour right up there with jimmy page, beck, harrison, van halen, townsend, santana, and all the top tier guitar virtuosos (behind hendrix, SRV, and clapton)

  @Masafaka: I don't think the group's creator is giving sole credit of Floyd's legacy to David Gilmour. I think he/she is essentially implying that Floyd didn't reach their creative peak until he was a member of the band, which I would agree with, but I agree it was very much a group effort, certainly until the days of Animals and The Wall anyway. Roger was the Brain, Gilmour and Wright were the Soul and Mason was the Feet.

  A group after my own heart. Syd Barrett was and always will be a figure of unrelenting mourning but as someone posted further down the page those who base their love for Floyd on his presence alone are missing a huge point. His guitar ability was inivative but not wonderful and stemming from that fact is the truth that had Syd remained as the soul guitarist and song writer we would have been unlikely to have treated to anything as magnificent and moving as Dark Side, Wish You Were Here etc due to the fact that their character is so heavily epitomised by Roger's lyrics and Gilmour's ability and style on guitar. Floyd evolved.

  I agree with icebreaker69 for 100%. I do not only respect David Gilmour as a guitarist, I respect him as a human being. He's a true english gentleman. An excellent sense of presence, true respect for his peers and undying love for his friends, and I do not even want to think about the day when he passes.

  If Waters was PF's brain, then Gilmour would be the soul. His guitar makes me feel like going outside with my player to lay on the grass, watch the stars and think 'bout nothing. And not just to listen, but to hear their music. Waters is great, a thousand times great. The Wall is The Album Of My Life. But Gilmour is immeasurable. I'd pay him to tune his guitar. [2] ! :)
