TheUnhinged There are three main bands that have the gothic tag that I just totally, TOTALLY disagree. Those bands are Madder Mortem, The River, and Left Hand Solution. We all know that they were only given the gothic tag because those three bands have female vocalists, which is seriously stupid. The River and Left Hand Solution are both doom metal bands, and Madder Mortem is progressive metal. I don't understand what is so difficult to understand about that.

RexRanarum What I like is when blokes who like actual gothic metal come around and (grammatically) incorrectly insult the way the mistagged stuff sounds. This goes way beyond tagging, too. Within Temptation's members have gone on record WTFing their gothic labeling. Is it just me, or does being any type of metal with a female vocalist seem to qualify the group for an automatic "gothic" tag?

NightVermillion I love gothic metal, but I don't have to be a genius that half of the stuff people tag as gothic metal is not. Seriously, why do most people tag Symphonic Metal as Gothic Metal? Nightwish is nowhere near being Gothic....

Pieerrot I think any band, group or singer can have gothic elements. It's all.

PoEVIL Nightwish is not gothic metal, and thus should be among the first bands to be discussed here along with others, like Visions of Atlantis f.ex.

SyrionNL @Hollevaen Still it's a "genre" made by the fans I doubt the bands labeled themselves "gothic metal". (By the way: ToT was the originator of the "beauty & the beast" doom style, the others followed.)

Hollenvaen @SyrionNL - yes, but in terms of what "gothic metal" is, it developed from the doom metal scene - leadin with the 3 Northern bands; My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema. It was then furthered when female vocals were added by the 3 Norwegian bands - The Sins of Thy Beloved, Theatre of Tragedy, and Tristania.

Psychogenic_: most of the groups are either doom-, power- or other sorts of metal. "Gothic" music is originally a form of dark punkrock (Joy Division, Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, etc.) Compare their music to what's labeled "gothic metal" and you'll hear quite a difference.
