Timba geeks, unite!...

"The newest and most controversial music out of Cuba, Timba is like salsa on steroids. It incorporates influences from Brazilian music, R&B, hip-hop and salsa. Note the different roles the piano and bass play. Just [a few] samples do not do justice to this anything-goes genre."_____________(Bill Wolfer, Mamborama)

Unfortunately, a few samples are pretty much what we have to go by within last.fm, as few timba artists are streamable. We've put together a streamable playlist, which is mostly-but-not-strictly timba, for reasons of streamability.

Our custom radio is probably a bit more interesting. Please visit the forum if you have questions or suggestions about it.

Finally, for the addicts out there, you might want to try listening by Artist Radio. Any of our linked artists will serve up a pretty decent selection, although my own experiments yielded the highest percentage of timba when listening to Music Like Maikel Blanco. If any of you have any other suggestions, please let me know!

Radio shutdown: Mediamaster, the site hosting Timba Radio, has been struggling of late and they've decided that they would shut down. So, very soon no more custom radio :( But in the 14 or so months we had it, it was a tremendous success, with over 22,000 songs listened to. Thanks to those who sent us mails, and I'll keep my eyes open for another place.

Hi everybody! Glad I found this group, as I've for a long time am in love w/ Cuban salsa - even written about it, from its African, son roots up etc. But time doesn't stand still, and since I have a lot of other things to keep an eye at, I am curious to learn from you, which Cuban groups in the genre you consider the top today.

Glad you like, PJ! When this group started out there was hardly any streamable timba at all, on last.fm or anywhere, really. It's come a long way since then!

Isn't it kinda strange that on the list of top artists (Sept 9)there's only one group of salsa cubana and no song that could be labelled as such?
