What was your first progressive metal band?

Two things, what was the first progressive metal band you heard, and also, what was the band that truly started you liking progressive metal?

As for me, the first progressive metal band I heard was Dream Theater. Most of the songs I heard were, unfortunately, from Awake and When Dream and Day Unite, so I had a pretty terrible opinion of them at first. To this day, Awake is the only Dream Theater album I can't listen to. My opinion of the band as a whole, however, has drastically changed.

Kamelot was really the band that got me into progressive metal, but as they are only progressive in a secondary sense, I would have to say that MadSword was the first true prog band that I absolutely liked and began to seek out similar music to.

  • Well, for me the first progressive song I heard was Nosferatu from Evergrey. I really fell in love with this song and after some time with all evergrey´s music. :) And after some time I started to listen to bands like Queensryche and so. :D

I think it was Dream Theater's Metropolis pt. 1... or probably Evergrey's As I Lie Here Bleeding. Not sure.

(NP: Pain Of Salvation - Morning On Earth)

  • Queensryche / Operation Mindcrime is probably the first progressive metal I was exposed to.

The first progressive metal album I really got into was either Images&Words by Dream Theater or Angel Dust by Faith No More. [I think Angel Dust is progressive in the purest sense of the word. It was such a contrast of differing styles.]

I'm surprised you didn't like Awake by Dream Theater - that's actually one of my favorites from them. It may be a matter of my experiences at the time - I used to listen to Awake on a walkman while collecting shopping carriages in the middle of winter for a supermarket. (Gotta love college jobs like that..)

    1. V: The New Mythology Suite
    2. Burn the Sun

Jeff, you mentioned about Gianni's next project in the MadSword shoutbox. Care to elaborate?

Yeah, Gianni emailed me, but then he vanished. I sent him another followup and he didn't respond to that either. A pity, he seemed pretty enthusiastic in the first couple messages. I can't find anything on the net, which means either he isn't good with websites and isn't ready to pay someone, or they are local projects.

His address is g.g@ncc.it if you want to mail him yourself. It took me a bunch of time to track down his email. I ended up having to call Underground Symphony for it.

I'll send him another email sometime later.

    1. As far as I can remember, Dream Theater. My boyfriend tried to brainwash me into Dream Theater, but didn't quite manage and made me almost hate the band instead. Can't still stand it except for a couple of songs (Pull Me Under, for example). The brainwash thing also caused me to have a bad (wrong, you could also say) opinion of prog metal for a couple of years before something made me change my mind...

    2. Ayreon. I was a huge Stratovarius fan around the year 2000, and I bought Universal Migrator Part II: Flight Of The Migrator only because Timo Kotipelto did some vocals on the album. Well, everything just worked and it turned out to become one of my favorite albums. I started to rethink my musical taste. Around the same time I also found Shadow Gallery's Tyranny, which I still think is one of the best albums in the world.

This is the way my musical taste is still working: recommendations won't usually work, I'll have to find music myself or at least to be able to think I did.

Mine was Through The Looking Glass. I found it interesting, so I got some more songs from them and liked them all <3

Earlier, I listened to Evergrey, but that doesn't count, because I didn't know it was progressive.

My first song of a progressive band (if we skip genesis and similar) was ashes by pain of salvation but for that's more like HIM than progressive that doesn't count :)
my first progressive record were the "immortal?" by arena.
but the band that really got me into progressive was definitely "pain of salvation". for me the best band ever and doubtless one of the best live-acts of our times - seriously!
but i like the be record not very much. it's too strange for me i think.

Well, as for me - all begun from Dream Theater's "Scenes from a memory" and from that time I'm still think that this album is one of the best in prog metal...

Porcupine Tree was the first Prog Rock band and also the first any kind of prog band, and the first prog metal band was Dream Theater and I only listened to Awake but now I listen to six degrees of inner turbulence and Train of Thought.

Opeth was the really the first prog metal band I got into. I didn't like them at first, but they grew on me. Tool is probably the prog band that got me really into prog music, then came Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater...etc

  • The first progressive metal band I liked was Queensryche, because of Operation: Mindcrime, which I love not for its proggieness, but just as a masterpiece in general. The first band that opened me up to the prog metal world was Dream Theater, although I was basically raised on progressive rock.

My first progressive metal band was Dream Theater (the album Scenes From a Memory specifically). The band that really got me into progressive metal was probably Symphony X. However, at the moment some of my favorite progressive metal would be Communic, Disillusion, Circus Maximus, Ark and perhaps Pagan's Mind.
