Filk is songs written, sung, and listened to by science fiction and fantasy fans.
Thus they are not necessarily about SFF, they can be about anything else, and can be of any possible genre, though instrumental filk is pretty rare. (There are many many other definitions. What filk is not is an exact synonym of "song parody", however people define it)
Professional artists are usually not called filkers if they didn't originate from filk. Filk-like music by such artists is called "found filk".
