    In terms of rights and opportunities, the era we live in now is by far better. However, in terms of fashion, manners/etiquette, media, and much more... I think we could learn a thing or two from these eras. I think if we could find a 'happy medium' between our era and these, we'd be a lot better off as a society. [2]

    Probably, every era had its charm and its wisdom. It's so fascinating to learn more about them and find something you can apply nowadays. Ohhh I hated history for about 20 years, but today I undesrtand how magnificent this knowledge is ^_^ P.S. yeeeah, and I still like contemporary fashion, despite its vulgar and crazy face - it reflects our world like a mirror, and it's sooo interesting ))))

    In terms of rights and oppotunities, the era we live in now is by far better. However, in terms of fashion, manners/etiquette, media, and much more...     PS. That is not to say that peasants couldn't have manners or be elegant... But they were normal people, who wore less than beautiful clothing and didn't follow the perfect etiquette of the monarchs. Consider Shakespeare, who wrote plays for the common people, as well as his wealthy patrons. He often included scenes of vulgarity to appeal to his audience. Just looks at any of his plays and you'll see that they contain jokes about drunkeness, sex and more.

    The world today definitely lacks a certain elegance that seemed to be present in the earlier days. However, we didn't live in those days and so really all we know is history books, painting and romanticized stories. Many of us would not be aristocrats, we would be peasants. And for those of us who are female, we wouldn't have many opportunities, much education, or many rights. We've only recently began getting human rights for all races and genders, and still that is an on going battle. And even in the first half of the century, racism and sexism were still strong. I know that my grandmother lived in a time when it was shocking and appalling for a woman to wear pants. So yes, today the world might be vulgar and less elegant, but I like to vote, I like to learn and I like to wear pants.

    Actually in fact, we can generalize quite easily, when it comes to this. The past wasn't of course purely beautiful (non-vulgar), but it was much better than now. I'm repeating myself, but things have gotten bad actually quite recently. The first half of this century was beautiful and elegant. What do we have now? To be a gentlewoman and gentleman is frowned upon (of course such people are not completely gone, but...). Where are the times of my grandparents?

    Oh sure, it is there... but the dominance of post-modernism suppresses culture and art (yes I believe that not everything can be culture and art). But I'm sure it'll never disappear and maybe someday, it'll return. Or am I naive to hope so?

    While I do agree that society today is more "vulgar" than past societies, I think it is a tad bit contrived to base your analysis of society on the behaviour of members of one onlie society. There is still art and culture in our society, and while it may be difficult to find it is definately there.

    I'm not saying (or at least it wasn't my intention to say) that the past wasn't vulgar, but I think it wasn't on such great scale. Now somehow I think vulgarity is becoming a norm. You know it's "totally cool" to be vulgar.

    They are much too vulgar in this time period for me too. But there was vulgarness back then too. In fact they were worse in some ways I think. But still......

    Actually I disagree. In the past, even those not-so-fortunate knew how to dress properly and when. Even my grandparents, who were farmers dressed elegantly, whenever they could (that means, when they were not working). But it's not just the way you dress, it's also about the way you behave and act. It's quite obvious that the present is very vulgar in comparison to the past. Even recent past (the first half of 20th century) is superior to the present.

    Indeed, no time traveling machine, yet. The most viable option is some kind of "revival" or "renaissance" of at least one the above mentioned periods. The present is so vulgar, so non elegant...

Personal desires aside, I have to say that this group seems quite interesting. It is always nice to see people who share the same interest for these past times.
