For those who are grateful for the multicultural environment in which they live or have had experience, appreciating especially the wonderful music they have discovered & are discovering as a result!

Pour ceux qui sont reconnaissants de l'environnement multiculturel où ils habitent ou ont connu. Ils apprécient surtout la musique merveilleuse qu'ils ont découvert et sont en train de découvrir par suite!

Multiculturalism already happens everywhere - and has been going on indefinitely as people meet their neighbours. For example, China is not a monoculture, there are Han Chinese communities in most Asian ports. Somali communities have existed in English Atlantic ports since the late 16th or early 17th century. So some kind of multiculturalism is inevitable in Human societies; the options are to just get on without analysis, to celebrate diversity, or to lament it.

Suggest 'Rodrigo y Gabriela' be connected. Two Mexicans, living in Dublin, playing rock and latin inspired acoustic guitars (instrumental). Another magnificent melange of cultures!

Suggest 'Orquesta de la Luz' be connected (see my journal for for comments). A japanese band playing Salsa so hot it was accepted in the New York Hispanic community must be a prime example of multiculturalism.

Hi! I too am a Londoner. My background is North London Ashkenazi Jewish, and I have a lovely Jamaican wife. I love living in such a cosmopolitan city.

Hey..you should connect the likes of MIA (or M.I.A.) , Nitin Sawhney , Talvin Singh , Natacha Atlas or even Burial...I mean their music is clearly a product of living in a multicultural environment. Then there's the obvious choice of Peter Gabriel and Robert Wyatt are heavily influenced by 'world music' and both embrace multiculturalism. Going back in time, you have the likes of The Clash and The Specials who sang about multiculturalism ( although some of it wasn't so positive about it) under Thatcher's Britain in the late 70's and early 80's. Outside British shores you have Tinawaren,Marta Sebestyen and the late great Miriam Makeba who broke down boundaries with their music and seem to be popular whether in South America or Southampton. I seemed to got carried away here but I think there are loads more artists to add here..

Pleasant surprise to have a member so quickly :)... Yeah, that it does & I'm saddened by it too. I've both a European and Caribbean background, born and bred in London & have always appreciated both. I grew up on Reggae, spent time with my English grandparents listening to great composers & folk music & school introduced me to music from all over the place. It is sad how all this is seen as mutually exclusive by some people. Anyway, thank you for joining! And please feel free to suggest some new artists to connect to the group, though it is a work in progress...

What a great group..Multiculturalism seems to be a dirty word in Britain at the moment..sad really. I'm a Asian who grew up listening to Punjabi songs and post-punk music in equal measure. As a result I like to think that my musical tastes doesn't discriminates..I'll listen to anything..as long it's good enough.
