The festival has so far released for July 15th - 17 th 2010 artists like Mew (DK), Dinosaur Jr. (US) Clutch (US), Danko Jones (CAN), Datarock (N), The Sonics (US) and BigBang (N).

In 2009 the festival staged artists like Kaiser Chiefs (UK), Eagles of Death Metal (US), The Wombats (UK), Moneybrother (SE), Bob Hund (SE), Motorpsycho (N) and Sham 69 (UK).

The most major artists to have played at Bukta since its start must be said to be (feel free to disagree): Kaiser Chiefs (UK), The Hives (SE), Motörhead (UK), Kent (SE), Phoenix (FR), Mew (DK) and Calexico (US).

Neil Perry in The Guardian wrote: "If Glastonbury has become the Bluewater shopping centre of live music events, then Norway's Bukta festival is the funky little boutique tucked into a side street that you discover by happy accident. Bukta takes place 300 miles inside the arctic circle in Tromsø, frequently described as "a sleepy little town" - except for one weekend in July when the whole place goes endearingly nuts."

SOME HISTORY:
The festival was first staged in 2004, but its history can be tracked back a further two years. In 2002 and 2003 the North of Nowhere festival was arranged in a field near Åsgård, Tromsø.

At the very first Bukta Festival in 2004 roughly 5.000 attendees got to se Norwegian acts such as Sondre Lerche, Madrugada, Span and BigBang at what was considered the greatest festival success in Tromsø in more than a decade.

2005 dawned with a higher level of ambition, with international acts such as Phoenix (FR), Supersuckers (US) and The Soundtrack of Our Lives (SE) grazing the festival stage. Along with higher profile artists, attendance soared to 11.000 visitors. The very same year, Bukta Tromsø Open Air Festival picked up the gauntlet from North of Nowhere, and was awarded the "Festival Of The Year" award.

2006 saw further progression, and the festival was completely sold out a forthnight before the first concert. Some 13.000 attendees got to see among others Motörhead (UK), Danko Jones (CAN), Håkan Hellstrøm (SE), Mew (DK), Kaizers Orchestra, DumDum Boys and Seigmen.

For 2007, the festival was expanded from two to three days, something which enabled the festival directors to book even more acts and further expand the artistic palette of the festival. Many of the attendees will probably remember 2007 as the year Iggy & The Stooges visited Tromsø.

In 2008 the festival added an additional stage, and a total of 28 bands playd for a record crowd. With The festival being sold out all three days, more than 20.000 people got to se amongst others Patti Smith (US), Woven Hand (US), Leningrad Cowboys (FI), Kent (SE) and Raga Rockers.

The festival area has a daily capacity of 6000 people, and consists of two stages.

    Dinosaur Jr. (US) will play at Bukta '10! Despite not gaining much commercial success, the band has enjoyed something of a cult following. The success of singles Freak Scene and Just Like Heaven singles, and recommendations from the likes of Sonic Youth saw them signed by Warner Brothers. The signature Dinosaur Jr. sound is the melodic tunes saturated in layers of guitar noise and punctuated by J Mascis’ elaborate, yet laconic guitar solos. They were a major influence on the up-and-coming band Nirvana.

    Hayseed Dixie (US) and Danko Jones (Can) will play at Bukta '10! Danko Jones is a three-piece hard rock band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Formed in 1996, they have released four studio albums and their fifth studio album is set for release in May. Danko Jones has made a name for themselves by relentless touring across Europe and North America and their vivid and energetic live performances. Hayseed Dixie are an awesome live band, who have, to date, released 9 albums. The latest, ‘Killer Grass’ was released in 2010. A live DVD entitled ‘No Sleep ‘til Liverpool’ is also available.

    The Sonics (US) will play at Bukta '10! The Sonics are a garage rock band formed 1960 in Tacoma, Washington, United States. The band’s loud, powerful sound is often considered to be extremely influential on the later psychedelic and punk genres. In 2007, The Sonics reunited again, this time for the Cavestomp garage rock festival in Brooklyn.

    Hurra Torpedo (N) and The Blacksheeps (N) will play at Bukta '10! This is part of Saturday mid-day concerts, where you don't have to be 18 yrs. old to attend (but no alcohol served). Hurra Torpedo is Norway’s most famous kitchen appliance band, formed in the early nineties. They are a part of the artistic collective Duplex Records, and all members of the band also play in a variety of other bands in Norway. The band struck international fame when a television performance of the 1983 Bonnie Tyler power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, using kitchen appliances for percussion, spread as an internet meme.     Juliette Lewis (US) will play at Bukta '10! Lewis has launched a career as a solo singer and musician, leading a group called Juliette and the Licks which has released a number of recordings. She is working with rock songwriter Linda Perry, among others. Lewis has also appeared on three tracks by rock-techno group The Prodigy’s 2004 CD “Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned” (Spitfire, Get Up Get Off and Hot Ride). She is in the H.I.M. video for “Buried Alive By Love”.

    Mondo Generator (US) will play at Bukta '10! Mondo Generator (sometimes known as “Nick Oliveri And The Mondo Generator”) is an American punk/hard rock band fronted by Nick Oliveri. Their last album, "Dead Planet" was released in 2007, and got recommendations like: "positively brilliant" (Metal Hammer), "will raid your medicine cabinet and fuck your wife 4/5" (Kerrang), "intelligent and impressively mature" (Rocksound) and " deranged and magnificient" (Sunday Times).

    BigBang (N) will play at Bukta '10! Bigbang have been dubbed Norway’s Greatest Live Band, and have been a major force in the Norwegian music scene for over a decade. During the past two years, the band has spent time focusing on the American market. Based in California, they have toured the country, playing intimate gigs and promoting their American debut From Acid to Zen, a compilation of songs from previously released albums. The album was very well received and resulted in great reviews among others from Rolling Stone Magazine’s Editor David Fricke: It’s a shotgun buffet, like those early U. S.     Hellbillies (N) will play at Bukta '10! Hellbillies are a country rock group from Ål in Hallingdal, Norway. Since their founding in 1990, they have become one of Norway’s most popular recording artists/groups. The group sings only in the Hallingdal dialect (not in English or “standard” Norwegian). When they have covered American songs — as they sometimes did on their earlier albums — they translated the lyrics into Hallingdal dialect and/or wrote new lyrics that reflect contemporary Norwegian people, life and culture. Today, most of Hellbillies recordings are original material. As of 2008, the group has recorded ten albums — two of which are “live” albums. The group has also collaborated with musicians from the US such as Rob Hajacos (fiddle player for Garth Brooks) from Nashville, who plays fiddle on at least three of Hellbillies’ albums.     Moddi will play at Bukta 2010! Moddi is the solo project of Pål Moddi Knutsen, a North Norwegian boy in the twenties using his accordion and ocean blue guitar to make songs that “always sound bigger in my head than what ends up on tape”. His debut album was recorded in Greenhouse, Reykjavik, produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson, and was released in february 2010 on Impeller Recordings to great reviews. http://www.last.fm/music/moddi

    Clutch (US) will play at Bukta 2010! Clutch is a band from Germantown, Maryland, United States. They have been playing together since the early 1990s. They released their first EP, Pitchfork, in October of 1991. Each of Clutch’s albums is marked by its own distinct and cohesive sound and the band’s musical style may be said to have migrated from hardcore punk to hard rock and blues over the course of their career. Clutch’s lyrics, at first angry and serious in tone, had by the time of 1993’s Transnational Speedway League become characterized by intelligence, wordplay, and often humor (although comedy is not usually the focus).     Ingenting (Sweden) will play at Bukta 2010! Ingenting is Sweden's hottest band at the moment. Ingenting was formed in 2003. Their debut EP Ingenting Är Lätt was released in digipak in May 2004. With influences ranging from Velvet Underground and Pixies to Beach Boys and a Swedish 70’s touch the band refuses to admit, manages to sound like nothing else but themselves.     Mew (DK) will play at Bukta 2010! Mew wanted to return to Bukta - Tromsø Open Air Festival, four years after they played last time. And this time they will take a bath in the sea at the beautyful surroundings of the festival! "It's a great festival! The site is very good, the nature is fabulous, and the atmosphere is superb. This is very important when we decide where we want to play. I remember the midnight sun, and the beatyful sea. But we didn't get to swim in the sea last time. This time we will!" (my translation), says Silas Graae, Mew's drummer. Mew has released two albums since last time they played at Bukta: "And The Glass Handed Kites" (2006) and "No More Stories..."     John Olav Nilsen & Gjengen will play at Bukta 2010! The band made their big breaktrough in Norway this year! They're a Norwegian band from Loddefjord in Bergen. The band was created in 2007. They play a mixture of pop, rock, soul og punk which they like to refer to as “streetpop”. All the lyrics are in Norwegian.     Sivert Høyem will play at Bukta 2010! Høyem rose to fame in the late 1990s when Madrugada made their Norwegian breakthrough with debut album "Industrial Silence". Madrugada has been the greates rockband in Norway for many, many years. Høyem has the last few years had success as a solo artist, releasing the albums Ladies and Gentlemen of the Opposition (2004), Exiles (2006) and Moon Landing (2009).
