Cookd n Bomb'd...and your point is?..

As a group of clever and tastefull Morris fans, I'm sure that there are a few people on here who have heard of-and probably visited-the Chris Morris fansite, Cookd n Bomb'd, which my recent shout out message brought hurtling painfully back to my mind.

Set up as a site dedicated to the great man's work, and downloadable archive of almost all his previous audio projects, you would expect a place of open-minded greatness. Some healthy debate, unbiased fan opinions and obviously much rumour and speculation about his future projects.

Why, in that case, instead of reading the musings of intelligent well-ballanced people (as you would expect Bombers to be) does it seem to be frequented almost exclusivley by people who appear to hate at least 95% of his work, and who will only be happy if he makes Brasseye over and over again untill he looses the will to live?
In other words, there seems to be much posturing, flaming and arrogant assumption that been a fan of a genius, somehow makes you an authority on comedy as a whole, and the only person qualified enough to even mention him, let alone discuss what he should be doing next. Remember the uproar about him joining the cast of The IT Crowd?

Despite him personaly saying that he took part because he liked the script, and the fact that it was a good-natured show that wasn't trying to be crude or upset people (which is where all fan argument should have ended), there were some who were still convinced that it was proof that all his work choices now are made purely on the basis of how much he will earn, and seem to be of the oppinion that anything involving him that doesn't include distressed video effects, obscure music or celebrity stitch-ups is a travesty.

Don't get me wrong, I love the near-freedom of speech that you almost have there, it's something that few sites can get away with. But the fact that many Morris fans I know (including myself if I'm honest), are too nervous to post on a site set up supposedley in honour of such an intelligent, open-minded individual, shows that something has gone very wrong.
O.K I like the Tumbleweed Awards, and have to confess to agreeing with most of the veiws they have there on the criminally over-rated award magnets that pass for comedy stars today, (Ricky Gervaise? Rob Brydon? Catherine Tate? DAVID MITCHEL?! Don't get me started.) But most people who pass by the site to browse it's archives, can't get past the bile to see the worth...and there is suprisingly much decent commentary to be read in the award reviews, unlike elsewere.

They rant on about the kind of performers and writers who keep trotting out the same old material, too lazy or frightened to take risks or find anything new that works just as well as the work that made them famous. Yet that seems to be exactly what they want from their supposed hero...Who I beleive is the last man on earth to deserve such a fate, and who hates such repetativeness himself.

Is it just me? Have I seen something that isn't really there, or is this hatred and anger there, but not as bad as I perceive it to be?

Hopefully someone can confirm my fears, or perhaps set me straight. Or perhaps this whole comment should have gone in the Articles page, seeing as it's gone on for far, far too long...mabey it should.
But if so it will be the only thing I will ponder over on reading this back, and certianly not the oppinions of the elected authority of Cookd n Bomb'd.

    Aww, thanks. : )

  • Re: Cookd n Bomb'd...and your point is?..

Ill-informed bollocks. There was no 'uproar' over Morris joining The IT Crowd; the general opinion was undoubtedly swaying toward 'it's nice to see him performing again,' especially so with it being a Linehan project, and a non-wanky three-wall telly sitcom. Unfortunately, as it turned out, it was poorly-scripted rubbish. Us not liking "95%" of his stuff is fucking ridiculous, as is saying everybody wants another Brass Eye. You've blatantly read a few posts, made no effort whatsoever to properly gauge general consensus, and stormed off and written this post. Which is sad, because without CaB most of us would never have heard the likes of Blue Jam, the Radio 1 shows, the GLR shows, No Known Cure, etfuckingcetera. . .

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself, young man.

Re: Cookd n Bomb'd...and your point is?..
"Uproar" is simply a choice of word used to creatively describe the general feeling towards his casting in "The I.T Crowd", and you cannot deny that there were many people who had decided before even seeing the show that it was a step down for him creatively.
If you had rather I'd used another word (and there are many I could have chosen) then by all means have quick browse through a thesaurus and imagine another one in it's place. We all have a right to use our language as we see fit, as do you if a word you see doesn't take your fancy. : )

But where exactly are all these supportive, happy comments you speak of, from people who were delighted to see him appearing in it? "Some" does not by any means equal "Most", and I can recall seeing with my own eyes much to the contrary.
I cannot deny what I've seen, and you can choose to believe it or not, but to say that what I wrote is untrue simply because you do not like it is very rude indeed.

There are many ways for people to discover his work too, not just CaB.
Due to been lucky enough to have older cousins who introduced me to his more obscure radio shows as and when they happened, and who made copies for me too I didn't have to rely on it or any other site later on. I will not be the only one who discovered his work by other means, so such self-importance on their part is rather unfounded.
So considering that your argument seems to be that any amount of rudeness and knee-jerk negativity can be excused because of said site having show downloads is quite irrelevant, (particularly as this body of work can in fact be found in many other places on the internet, and via other fans).

I cannot remember any topic that did not have a majority poor feeling on it's forum topic board with regards to any of his shows, but I hope you noticed that I said "almost" all when talking about the commenters. I clearly did NOT say that all people there were of the same feeling towards it, just that many still seem to cling on too much to past memories, and can let that judge how they feel about a person's new work, (you cannot deny that such attitudes exist).

Contrary to your accusation, I read many things that were said about the series (as I do whenever he makes something new or there are rumors hinting towards such an event), at the time when The I.T Crowd was in production and people first started talking about it.
That was a very long time ago, and as you can see I made my post near the end of last year...a long time after the first series aired...no storming of in a huff there, we are all adults after all.

There has to be some truth in what has been said by me-and others-about the site because whenever I've read anything about other sites, I don't see much evidence of rebuttal from those concerned. But those on CaB are so overly sensitive when it comes to discovering that there are some people in the world who aren't as in awe of the site as they are, that they cannot wait to leap to it's defense.
It won't damage them in any way, so why care?..methinks the ladies and gentlemen doth protest too much.
Is it any wonder so many people never return?

And Re: your last comment, I (like any intelligent person) will never feel ashamed of myself for having an opinion. Not for any reason, and certainly not just because it doesn't equate with what others think I should believe.

Also I'm a woman by the way, I just don't have a digital camera to add my own photo, (but it is nice to know that you're tolerant and liberal enough to not automatically assume that a person with a naked picture of the South Park writers in their profile must be a girl, so that's nice). : )

    Double Post.

Apologies for the resultant double-post due to frozen page hassle.
It can't be deleted it seems, so I've removed it as best I can for the sake of space. : )

  • During the time between The I.T. Crowd's announcement, its airing and afterwards I was reading CaB probably every day, so take my word for it as to the site's consensus.

". . .and you cannot deny that there were many people who had decided before even seeing the show that it was a step down for him creatively"

I can because it isn't true. I can't recall any, as it happens. As I've said, most of us are Linehan fans, looked forward to the idea of an 'old-fashioned sitcom' and always rated Morris as a performer (which he'd not done in a while), not to mention not particularly liking Barley, so hoping this would be more of a return to form.

The rest of what you've said is drivel. Also, I'm sorry you're a woman, I had no idea.
