    Two sides to Björk

I've been thinking about how she's changed over the years and it's really alarming to jump from one interview in the early 90s to one now on YouTube. I figure her 6 albums can be divided into her two sides. The first three were when she was the calm and intelligent, casual clothed and always smiling, traditional Icelandic gem. After Vespertine, she turned into this (not that I hate her) 'hateable' over-the-top pop star and is trying to enforce the "Björk is weird" factor on everyone, starting with the Oscars dress.

What do you guys think? Has she changed, improved, worsened or is she still that sweet old Sugarcube?

well, these things that you have said have a little bit of true. I downloaded almost all her discography, and I could see these changes in her music. At Debut, it was kind of a simpatic electronic. At Post and Homogenic, it was a little bit more electronic than Debut, and at my opinion, these two albums are the best. After Vespertine, her music started to sound different, and it started to be a little bit strange. Medulla sounds the same way, but anyway, I like them. Now, Volta for me are different from each album, 'cause it sounds really good. I confess I don't listen to Volta every time I go listen to music, but it's one of my favorite albums.

for me, she has changed a lot before Vespertine, and for me it sounds so good than before, I like both 'phases'. But, maybe, for another people it doesn't sounds good. It goes by the one who listen.

I think she's just maturing. Before, all her music were fun, dancy and groovy, but it's gotten darker and more mature. It's not really bad, because I love her recent work. She's just constantly reinventing herself to push the limits of musical expression.

  • You know I was thinking the same thing these days... she's less jumpy, smiley and childish I guess... she looks older, matured, but in a bad way, 'cause she looks so serius, it's like jae__moon said, she almost becomes hateable with the new attitude, not than anyone here wants to hater her, but it's that weird/different attitude she has. I like her adorable ways of her tender years up until Verspertine. I dunno if I'll get used to her new ways, but all people change, and get older, so, we can't do anything about it.

  • Umm, KIND of, but I think its way too broad of a generalization there.
Her last three albums I do find more over-listenable than the early three, since they go deeper.

agree with elvenstone. she looks so much mature and serious now, but people always get mature, and that's nothing to do about it. but Volta seems to me a little bit like the firsts. I don't know, but it sounds less 'dark' than medúlla. more clearly, by the way.

from the sugarcubes (which i still listen to today) to now i definitely think she has improved not that she wasn't amazing then just from a group to a solo artist i don't think she could have made a better career move. her albums are in a league of there own not a single artist can surpass her vocal talent. FACT!!!

she is the best solo artist in the world in my eyes.

"stand colonists........ ignore there patronising........ tear off your blindfold..........open your eyes!!!"

Play the game the game gets played if you've got a line then you'll get payed
  • I think her progression and experimentation as an artist is beautiful, and is what truly sets her apart from many other popular musicians. She stays uniquely true to herself and her music, and the result is always undefinable and spontaneous. You never know what you're going to get with a new Björk album, and that's because her artistic vision refuses to remain stagnant andis in constant evolution.

I honestly don't mind which direction she takes her music. I'm a fan of both the happy (Post) and dark (Medúlla) Björk.

  • i think homogenic - vespertine - medulla are her best albums and all feel like logical progressions from their predecessors. volta feels sort of like an album where she just wanted to make a bit more dancy music again, while recharging for a masterpiece that she will blow us all away with when she releases it :) cant wait...

I don't care about her public persona.

  • She's such a doll. I see what you mean though, it almost seems like she's trying to use that publicitised fact that she's weird to sell albums. Her music, in my opinion, hasn't been affected, and that is what it's all about, but it saddens me to see change like this. You can't entirely judge though, because I'm almost certain nobody here knows her in real life, so it could just be as simple as "she felt like it" in reality.

Nonetheless, she makes inspiring music, takes a breathless photo, and does it all with style and grace, even if it's forced.
