Can you link events to groups? I added some Adelaide Symphony Orchestra events I hope to go to which are relevant. There's Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Respighi for a start plus Szymanowski, Poulenc & Dukas.

That's also my favorite movement of Shostakovich's Piano Quintet!

PS In case you think I'm going soft on the Shostakovich/Stravinsky thing, listened to the Shostakovich Piano Quintet for the umpteenth time today and it is still my favourite piece of chamber music ever written. If you haven't heard the fourth movement in particular you haven't lived!

Does anyone else here own this DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Return-Firebird-Petrushka-Scheherazade/dp/B00006L74J Supposedly it recreates the early Ballet Russe performances of Stravinsky's work. I have to say that both the Firebird and Petrushka are superb (I've owned it for ages - a present from my folks). The dance by the monsters in Firebird along to a few of the greatest lines of music written blows your mind.

@Solanum: Thanks for your clear reply. I totally agree with your description of Shostakovich growth of skills, but as a great Stravinsky-lover I cannot say that Shostakovich's oeuvre is more impressive. Stravinsky's output is way more uneven in style, but nevertheless, to me his last works are equally impressive as his masterpieces from the 1910s... But I'm a fan. :-)

@alleseter, I guess by "influence" I was thinking of the listening public rather than other composers. I would certainly agree that those others had a larger effect on their peers/students (outside of the USSR as you say), though Shostakovich was good friends with the likes of Benjamin Britten. I was brought up on Shostakovich (in the 70s & 80s) and for me only Stravinsky (of those you list) has an effect that compares with Shostakovich. The difference being that (in my opinion) Stravinsky went rapidly off the boil whereas Shostakovich's skills built up over his lifetime producing a far more impressive oeuvre as whole. Your final sentences indicate that my thoughts on the reasons for his lack of influence in the US may not be that far off the mark...

    2009年 12月
  • alleseter

Dear Solanum, Shostakovich's impact on 20th century is, outside the USSR, rather small, and cannot be compared to the massive influences of (older) composers like Claude Debussy, Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky... In fact, during most of the 20th century, he was largely considered to be old-fashioned and outside the avant-garde. Only after the fall of Eastern European communism Shostakovich's importance was fully recognized in the West. Only then he became influentual there, too. At that point the 20th century had only ten years to go...

Hey, I just found this group and I'm amazed that the group description mentions people like Philip Glass, but not Shostakovich. Now I'm biased as I love Shostakovich and find Glass sends me swiftly to sleep, but I can't imagine many (any?) composers with a bigger impact on 20th Century music than Shostakovich. It looks like the description is taken from Wikipedia. Now I have a (slightly, but not entirely, tongue in cheek theory) that Shostakovich is to some extent, overlooked in the US as a result of cold war propaganda, but not in Europe. Do our listening habits give evidence for/against this I wonder?

I would like to mention that Last.fm has a lot of very good Mahler recordings hidden due to bad tagging by the record companies, e.g. from EMI (everything with Sir John Barbirolli and Dame Janet Baker). See the thread about recommended recordings in the Gustav Mahler group discussions for details. ZZee ya, Hans-Jürgen

If you like the Rite of Spring then read Van Den Toorn. The UCSB professor was bar tending in Boston when he wrote a book on the Rite of Spring that revolutionized how theorists viewed the piece and had colleges from across the globe trying to give him a free ride. Personally, I prefer the Symphony of Psalms.
