i'm having the same problems with the proxy thing, and I don't use a proxy either. i've noticed it's started happening after I installed itunes, which was about a week ago now.. what can I do?

  • Proxy Settings is a generic error wich means that the client access to the internet is somehow blocked, so is not regarding the client itself but very likely some third security software wich is managing your computer's internet access.
    So the reasons could be:

    - you are actually behind some Proxy, quite common if you are trying to connect from some some shared place like office/university etc. Getting in touch with the local system administrator is the only thing you can do.

    - you are connecting through a router/wifi. This devices normally have their own firewall/proxy built-in. It can be configured by browser and you should check the device user manual about how and what to do.

    - You have an antivirus/firewall software installed on your computer, or you have one built in in you operative system. Double check configurations, once again consult its help section. Eventually shut down all these security softwares and restart the client, at least you'll know if that is the source of the problem.

    - If all the previous steps didn't solved your issue, try to re-start your last.fm user session, simply from the client click on your username in the account dropdown menu.

There aren't really any other reasons why your client shouldn't be able to reach our servers, unless they're temporary offline for some reason.
You can check this in real time from
    here.

At the moment there aren't any know connection issues on Last.fm side apart from some compatibility problem with Bit Defender firewalls.

    Works... but

it works after re-entering my data and all, but when it connects, it scrobbles tracks that are in "none-scrobble" areas...

Well, I used the Cleaner method described a few pages ago, the cached scrobbles I had are now gone, and my client still can't connect to the server. -_-

Hello, I'm having this issue with the software... as some of you guys

I don't have any firewall activated or something that can block the connection.

I alreay tried everything but nothing worked!

    I'm currently using Windows XP.

The following steps should fix it:

    • Quit the client
    • Click "Run..." in the start menu.
    • Type %PROGRAMFILES%\Last.fm\Cleaner and press enter
    • Change your password at the site

      ---------------

Now you can restart the client and enter your new password.

On Vista type that the command into the "Start Search" bar instead (the bottom bit of new vista start menu).

Sorry about this, questions welcome below.

I was directed to this solution from another thread, but I'm running the OSX client. Is there an analogue to this solution for Mac users?

  • On OSX you don't need the cleaner.exe, i don't know what is exactly your problem but these are the common solutions to connection errors:

    - obviously check if any firewall/proxy is blocking the application
    - click on your own username under account
    - change your password

I have tried pretty much everything suggested in this thread and I still can't get my client to scrobble onto the site. It says:
    Error: Could not reach server.

All the songs I scrobbled last are in my cache. I've re-installed, re-entered passwords, clicked on my username a bunch of times, open and closed it, and it still won't scrobble. I don't have a proxy or a firewall on. So what else could I do?

i'm having the exact same problem. the diagnostic thing says that it won't connect to the server, i've also done the same thing as the girl above me.

  • Re-entering the username/password in the client did it for me. Thanks for the support. This problem was baffling me!

  • Having the same issues. It's silly too, because I can tag and love and it shows up on my profile immediately, but I can't scrobble a thing.

OK, so I've checked this entire topic, did EVERYTHING there is to do and I still get the damn proxy error. This is really getting annoying and I'm losing my patience, I've been trying for like a couple of weeks now. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

  • Is this started out of the blue? wich internet connection are you on?

Yeah, it's out of the blue. I'm on a cable connection on a laptop, connected wirelessly to my desktop PC. And YES, I've checked everything that has to do with the WLAN ( firewalls, antiviruses, etc etc... ) and it's not the problem, since everything is working perfectly, every single application I've got...Except Last.fm :(

  • Exact same here... strange thing is that it works on my desktop computer. On my laptop, however, it doesn't really do anything useful. Tried running the cleaner and all, but now it won't even respond when I set up the client again - it just keeps on showing the vista-waiting image on my mousepointer. Even with all firewall stuff turned completely off. What is it :-(

and by the way: the embedded flash client has trouble connecting, too. 'Oops! Error connecting' keeps on being shown. Something to do with it?

I was having this problem, too (tracks would scrobble in client, but not the site, and I couldn't connect to get plugins). The fix for me was re-entering my username and password, and then checking in the Account menu.

Ever since I arrived at University a couple of weeks ago I had been having the same problem as everyone has been discussing in this thread. Turns out there was a proxy thing. I went onto to the University network help site and found something about configuring browsers which gave me the Proxy information I needed to get the client working again.
    Thanks!

I've uninstalled last.fm, and now I cannot log in. Last.fm's stuck on the Log In screen setup wizard and cannot advance. And somehow, if I open the program by clicking it from the toolbar, it shows my account already.

I'm running XP. And I've tried changing password. Thanks

  • Just Change Password again

i had this problem, it just wouldnt connect,
    i ran the cleaner,
logged out and deleted my last fm user in the client,
and then changed my password on the site
    i then ran last.fm client
added myself again with new password
and now everything scrobbles just fine!
    which is fantastic.
i must say however i did submit this problem to support and was a bit dissapointed
i realise you guys are very busy but i never even got a reply
its all cool now tho i sorted it

Probably you have to correctly set your firewall/antivirus since is quite common for some of them that anytime you remove a software, if you reinstall it you need to assign to it the privileges to access the internet.

When did you sent the support request? did you got the automatic message to confirm your request has been queued? Otherwise it got somehow lost or more likely blocked by your mail filters for some reason.

    Connection Error

I am having the same problem -
Last.fm "Couldn't connect to the internet to verify your user details. If you use a proxy..."(etc)

    I do not use proxy.
I am using windows xp pro. this is a new computer. Ive been using winamp and last.fm together for over 2 years. The old computer still works, and uses an old version of winamp - 5.2. (i avoid updating something that never gives me probs, and I love the simple old version)

I disabled my firewall and virus protection, no help.
I uninstalled and reinstalled both programs.
I changed my password. this did not help. I changed it back hoping that it does not confuse the last.fm on my other computer.
I cannot get INTO the client to change any settings because the client won't start without connecting to the net first to set up for this computer.
I disabled my wireless and connected using my ethernet cable. no help.

I AM using a 2wire modem/rounter. This may be the cause of the proxy error - however it is STILL WORKING on the other computer - but the previous computer was set up before I moved here, so the router may still be an issue.

I figure I might get more answers posting here rather than though only email support. help in numbers.

I also tried running the cleaning program, but since last.fm isnt yet set up for this computer yet, it cannot open the client properly.

    -
I am also have this problem: when I try opening the client, the first error I get is this:

"Last.fm was unable to connet to the plugin for your media player.
Details: could not start listening on socket. Socket error: 10013"

Could this problem be related? If I can fix this problem first, might it help?
(is there a way to install a plugin without opening the client?)

I also tried finding an older version of winamp, but couldn't. But I dont think that would help the connection problem.

    ANY HELP appreciated, thanks!

    ITS FIXED - OWN SOLUTION

THIS MAY PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT ON FIXING THE PROBLEM

Ok. None of the advice worked.
    But I fixed it.
    HOW?

The problem was with the installer I was using: Last.fm-1.5.2.38918
I uninstalled my current unusable last.fm - I couldn't even get past the setup wizard.

    I was lucky.
I used my old install files from my previous computer.

    LastFM_Win_1.0.0

No problems with the install, everything works perfectly.

    what worked for me...

Was getting this error: "Could not connect to server wrong username or password"
Hadn't used the fingerprinting software or anything. I did use VPN though.

    What worked for me:
    Ran %PROGRAMFILES%\Last.fm\cleaner.exe
Change my password on the site
Followed the last.fm setup with the new password

    And now it works.
