Last.fm is not handling the feedback well, IMHO

Everyone will see them except other logged on subscribers.

Thanks for checking. You have them on your page too.

  • I don't love it. I will not adapt. Everything works worse now and looks worse. If this does not eventually change back, I will leave. I was seriously considering subscribing only a day before this bullshit went live, and now I'm definitely waiting until the old layout is back.

  • HERE'S WHAT I HAVE TO SAY:

i don't think the new layout bothers me at all anymore, it's a different last.fm but it's still last.fm; i think people should get over it, really - maybe that's a change of tune, but i listen to sonic youth, so that's cool with me - and i'm not even sure why it bothered me so much in the first place - so i couldn't swear in my friend's shoutbox? i guess the devs have bigger things to worry about

i've run a website before, a big meaty one, it's difficult appeasing people and that was just a silly wiki thing. have some understanding and remember that your 15 euros or whatever does not pay for last.fm entirely; you're not even a shareholder

OH, BY THE WAY: i think the mods have handled this pretty well and the only real annoyance has been those fucking assholes posting these things all over shoutboxes going HURRRR IF U HATE THE NEW LAYOUT JOIN THIS GROUP, you're not even helping, you're just being an idiot. oh, and it doesn't matter if you were 'thinking' of subscribing, i've thought of a whole bunch of things and never done them, and i've never received a medal for it.

  • Last FM isn't handling feedback well because they know they're wrong!

No doubt this change was due to some new whippersnapper taking charge and trying to show off and make huge changes as some power play. The changes are not for the better. Very little has enraged me, web-wise. like this, other than the change nerve.com underwent a few years ago (losing them much business). They deleted more than 45,000 of my scrobbles. WHY? Of course, that's not going to win them any popularity contests. I really liked last fm before but may move to another site that is more user friendly and more apt to give some customer service! This is some anal retentive corporate drone-group who are forcing changes on loyal users. Boo to you!

it all comes down to one simple question:
who do i have to give a bj to get my old last.fm back?...

Well you could start with me ;)

  • Completely agree with the OP. Thanks to the staff members and moderators (though some of the moderators have responded quite unprofessionally - I know they do not work for last.fm, but they are representatives) who have been on these boards in the last few days, but there really needs to be a statement from the last.fm management team/execs. You owe it to your users and to your staff who've dealing with the backlash.
Honestly, you screwed - please just admit that. You issued a complete redesign of the site, unannounced to your users, that received lots of negative feedback in the beta testing. You rushed to launch the new site before it was working properly. You let us discover the reasons for this redesign through other news stories about your new advertising scheme, launch of your iPhone application, etc. You (apparently) had no plan to handle the uproar that was certainly going to come of all this from your users. This all amounts to, at best, poor business practice, and, at worst, arrogance/disdain for your customer base. I think a lot of us would be a lot less angry if we would just hear more from you. A note when we log in, an email to all users, something. Tell us about the new advertising. Tell us about all the exciting upcoming changes and when we might expect them. Many people have already said this, but it's worth repeating - we love this website and the reason we are here trying to have this dialogue with you is because we want it to remain the most wonderful and unique place on the web.
I am not here to whine or to be a hater. I want to thank the fantastic staff for all the work they've been doing and continue to do. This is my favorite place on the internet and if I didn't care about this site, I would've left last week.
As for constructive feedback (sorry if this is repeating what lots of others have said) -
    1) I would like the library feature a lot more if it weren't on my profile page and if it didn't take up so much space - can't we get rid of the pictures and have the library as another list?
    2) The pictures that I did like are gone - the quilts and the photos on the recommended events - photos on the recommended events make it easier to quickly scan that list for events that might be of interest.
    3) Weekly charts the way they used to be (with movement of the artists on the charts) would be great to have back, as well as weekly neighbours (I found weekly neighbours useful for discovering new artists as my top artists don't change much but my listening patterns vary from week to week).
    4) Artist tag clouds on their front page are useful - thanks for the On Tour button - love that.
    5) Shoutbox was better smaller and further up the page.
    6) Recently added to your library section seems quite useless - I already know what I've added to my library - can we have an option to turn this off?
    7) Home page is not useful - something like the old dashboard would be better.
    8) Would prefer a link to my profile up with all the other links on the top left, rather than up in the corner with that drop-down menu.
Hope this is helpful. I really do want last.fm to continue to be the best site on the internet!
Btw, new users that you will attract with the new generic-looking layout, who will click on all the fancy ads will not stick around for discussion when there is a site upgrade they don't like, they'll just go point-and-click elsewhere - consider that.

the worst 'update' of any website of all time. it's one huge step backwards in terms of functionality and usability. more mouse clicks to do less is not the way forward. me, im still debating on giving this site up for good. well done last fm, you certainly know how to keep your userbase happy

    bleh.

  • don't want ads - use ad blocker. i'm not subcriber, never been and now never will be, but i'm using it and never seen any ads for 2,5 years and not seeing now, even i'm loged out :)

agree with pretty much everyone about the layout, it's horrible! much better with the profile picture on the left, with the abou-me-section beneath it (why on earth are they separated? it's messy!), and it's facebookish and the shoutbox should definitely not have been moved (or changed into a wall/guestbook) (even though i'm really liking that i can read all the shouths now), and that weekly charts and overall charts have been hurled together, with artists/tracks above 200 disappearing ... not liking it one bit!

however: the recommendation pages are great, imo! i nevere really used last.fm for discovering music through recommendations before, it was just to much work (at least i thought it was). maybe i just need it all up in my face like it is now, because that's mainly what i've been using last.fm to these last couple of days. also the "on tour"-mark is great, and the event recommandation page, and the library! i nevere really listened to the radio before either, but now it's so tempting (looking forward to the skip-button functioning again, however)!

but the layout, the layout ... i'm grieving. and seriously, i don't need another facebook, with updates on what i've been doing and my journal all hidden on the side like "notes" and the cute little shoutbox looking like "the wall" on the bottom of the page ... this won't get me to stop using last-fm, however. it just makes me annoyed and aggrevated. and if people in the beta-group were complainig about the layout looking too much like facebook, the developers really should have listened, because it does! and every social (networking) site does these days. life on the internet is becoming increasingly boring and monochrome, and i don't think it's wise to copy the facebook-style ON EVERY SINGLE SOCIAL SITE. individuality and originality is kinda nice. at least i think it is.

The new layout is well.. interesting. I adored the old layout, it was for me a statement in the world we call the internet. Clean, slick and I never had the "me click where now?" feeling.

I miss my Weekly Top Artists on the main page, as I'm sure tons of other people do. MetalAD and other things look pretty stupid with the wider column (on the right, what gives?)

The library thing, hmm not too sure about that. I guess in a way it kinda works like Weekly Top Artists, but it's just not the same.

I vote for putting the shoutbox in the place where the embedded player is now.

Yes... I bought your Colgate toothpaste... the one with tartar control... and it made me feel, like a piece of SHIT!!!!!!!

My main problem is this: Top 50 artists --> Top 15 artists.

    Quoth Feanor:
Ah borgasm. He tries so hard to be the token asshole on the forum, except he's not here often enough so rather than making people angry he makes them laugh at him instead.

    All I Want...

...is what Facebook are currently offering, and what Livejournal offered when they changed their site. That is, the option to display my own last.fm pages in the 'old' style. The functionality of the 'new' last.fm is appalling, but at least with the option of the 'old' layout I'll be able to use it as I was before. As it is, I shall not bother to renew my subscription, and will probably stop using last.fm actively over the coming weeks.

  • you need to get these bugs fixed, i can't quote messages i need to reply to but missed cause there's no reply tracker and the forum is not functional as usual. at least make this revamping worthy by fixing what was wrong already with the old system...

first of all, there's a big difference between writing html/css and writing php/C++/whatever other programming languages last.fm's backend uses.

Secondly, I'm going to estimate that about 90% of the code in last.fm's software relates directly to reading from and writing to the database, all of which will need to be recoded to match the new database structure. For the 10% of the code that is used in between database input and output, yes, they can probably copy that over, but it's such an insubstantial amount of code that it's almost not worth the effort, especially since they'd likely have to change variable names anyway. When you have to do that much editing to old code, it's much simpler to restart it from scratch, and doing so will probably result in much less bloated code than you'd get from rehashing old algorithms.

you do realize that restarting from scratch does not in any way prevent someone to i.e. mantain the same design layout adapting it to the new stystem, yes? especially in php which has so many lovely features such as mantaining the body and content separate from the design. and that would just solve the layout issue that so many people appear to hate, not you or many others per chance but still a large number of people.

and i still mantain that launching a new version without informing people that because of this new format so many features of the website will be missing in action for a while (undefined period of time) if not forever is highly unprofessional.

What a nightmare the new site is. They have lost me, I can't play any tunes!

If it not broke don't fix it!

If only Last.FM had let this thought go through their head before the change.

I used the site regular but I'm afraid Last.fm I will not be returning.

If I cant listen and get around the site, what is the point of me visiting in the first place!

  • Is it just me or does this new version of last.fm seem MUCH slower and harder to use?

    Clones

Why does everything these days end up looking like Facebook? The reason why I liked Last Fm is because it looked like Last fm and focused on the music, not how many mates I have, and what colour pants I wear etc...

I also liked the fact I could have a little pop up radio and listen to it at work because I can't install the software due to security restrictions. Now everything is in house the streaming seems to be affected because it's taking forever to load the artist pages.

The small pop up player may still be an option to me but I can't seem to find it amongst all the tat.

Bring back the old Last Fm.

an eskimo kiss is worth more than gold
  • I can barely believe that anyone can claim that the functionality of the site is better than before, or even nearly as good as.

Why is there no pause button? what? hang on. Basic functionality please. the volume control is tiny.

what is this crap about my 'profile' being updated when i say i like a song? what? who cares about my profile?

why does it take me half a dozen clicks to get where i want to be?

    To LastFm Admin.
Please add functionality to your marvelous idea. Without functionality, ideas are best left to someone else.

People have been asking for this sort of real-time functionality for years. Lots of users care about their own profiles, and the data contained in them.

If they knew where you wanted to be, they might be able to give a reply...

The issue of adverts appearing on subscriber's pages is being looked in to, and is a bug.

Especially how the charts update immediately. It's great.
