Skipping should reduce the frequency of playing a certain track
I've got 12,300 songs in my library, what is stuff for 25 days, but I hear the same 20 songs over and over again up to three times a day. I do not want ban them, so I skip and skip and skip... it is frustating, because last-fm destroys good songs that way.
TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!! and i'm NOT hearing other songs! and the "radio stations". u can only add THREE artists or tags? they need to bring back the PLAYLIST ala iTunes.
You do not have that many tracks unless you've only ever listened to each song in there once. keep listening, try tag radios (or ones that others have created).
@cino60 the tag radio IS the new playlist

I think 12,300 tracks should be enough :) My favourite station is MIX, so if 12,300 are enought to hear the same song once in 25 days, it should be more seldom because the MIX RADIO provides also new tracks (as much as known tracks?).
so, why do I hear 5 times a day the same song? That destroys really good songs!

As I said, you do not have 12,300 tracks on your account unless you've listened to every song in your library only once, which you haven't. Not to mention the fact your counter isn't over 12k anymore.
Yes the repeating isn't great, I don't get it very much at all however and I have a lot of tracks...

It would be interesting to hear from staff, without giving away their trade secrets, a little bit about when and what effect skipping should have, and why they can't make the algorithm responsive more quickly. -There is probably a perfectly good reason.

edit 15Feb2012 Today I seem to be getting remarkably few repeats; (or the tag I'm playing is so bland that I'm not spotting them). ( ---15fh it's only 120 tracks... 8hrs+ & still finding new tracks )

I'm sorry, you are right, I do not have 12,300 tracks in my library.
But OK, let me give a different example. I have 772 loved tracks. Even if LastFM would play just these tracks, it would give stuff for one week (I listen maybe 6 hrs a day). So there should not be any repitations until one week is over.
But I do not want to listen just to my favourites. I want to hear all the songs in my library. If I dislike one I kick it out of the library.
