Located in Middelalderparken downtown Oslo, the annual Øya Festival took place between the 10th and 14th of August. Middelalderparken holds the city's medieval ruins, beautifully surrounded by a tiny lake and only a short walk from the new Opera House. This year the Opera House was part of the festival, hosting the opening concert by The National. Øya has always been good at including local clubs and music scenes: when the site closes at 11pm, festival goers can choose from a wide range of bands playing throughout the city. This year the clubs saw artists such as Caribou, Bear in Heaven, Four Tet, The Low Anthem, Villagers, Shearwater, Wild Nothing and Owen Pallett, to mention a few.
Øya is by now the most eco-friendly festival in Europe, even receiving the electricity used on site from renewable sources. Every little detail is considered. All food is ecological and garbage is recycled into 14 different categories. …
