Beethoven Overture: King Stephen
Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3
Beethoven Symphony No 5
Maria João Pires piano
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conductor
London Symphony Orchestra
Tickets: £7 £13 £19 £25 £32
The King Stephen overture was written to open a theatre in present-day Budapest with a flourish. Stephen is the Hungarian national hero who converted his people to Christianity. Beethoven disdained pianists who ‘only run up and down the keyboard… putsch, putsch, putsch!’ Instead, his own Third Piano Concerto delivers a turbulent dynamic piece. His magisterial Fifth Symphony is sometimes called the ‘Destiny’ Symphony: the composer explained the dramatic opening is ‘how destiny knocks on your door.’
