Cincinnati-via-Brooklyn band The National stealthily creep into the Best of 2010 Top Ten, sandwiching their cerebral rock between two brash'n'bossy pop divas.
Having formed nearly a decade ago, the five-piece have slowly built up a huge fanbase while continually receiving critical acclaim. Previous albums Boxer and Alligator were heavily endorsed by music websites like Pitchfork, while Q Magazine awarded this year's release, High Violet, with the Best Album gong at its annual awards ceremony.
High Violet saw the band explore their typically less-than-peppy subject matter - fear, anxiety, addiction, war - in subtle songs that rewarded repeated listening. In fact, a relatively small number of you contributed a truckload of album scrobbles, with the band racking up over 7.3 million during the year.
The National will tour Australia in January before hopping round Europe in February, supported by Danish folktronica band Efterklang and Canadian composer Owen Pallett.
